Always broaden your knowledge a bit if you're into yard sales and such. While I'm always on the lookout for vintage toys I also know a bit about vintage electronics. Some here know about records, books, glassware and so on. I've had some good pick up over the years and even this year but today was one of the better ones. Picked up a mint vintage 70's Pioneer SA-9800 Integrated amp. My cost $10, it weighs around 45-50 pounds. Brought it home and wiped the dust off it, threw it on Craig's List with make an offer. Usually I never do this and always try to set the price but this was a bit rare so I wanted to see what would happen. Within an hour had a guy call me on it said he'd been after one for years in this kind of condition. Said we'd talk price once he got here and was driving over from North Carolina as we were speaking. We met up this afternoon and he was so excited to see it this kind of condition. We hooked it up, tested it in all ways and then he basically begged me to take his $750 for it. Who was I to let him down. Done deal and we both were happy. A couple of years ago I knew nothing about vintage electronics but now I do and it's paid off big time. I've had many scores ranging from $100 - $400 with old stereos but this was my best yet. The moral of the story is pick something else that interests you, no matter what it is, learn a little about it then keep your eyes and ears open. People are onto toys, comics, records, cards, movie and superhero items but there are still some hidden gems out there that some don't know much about. It pays off. Matt, Chris (ant-tiger), Greg and a few others here have been kind enough to give me guidance from time to time over the years. It really opens up the chance for more potential big scores!
Very nice score. Don't shy away from old Fisher stuff either. Most of it was made by Pioneer for SEARS. I still have my original one that I got when I was 10. I've also diversified quite a bit and wonder what I've passed on in earlier years that I shouldn't have. Cameras and small electronics have done well for me. Picked up a mint in box Kodak Bantam F6 pull face camera this morning for $3. In the same yard sale got two early led calc's and a small leather case transistor radio. Also an original, Sony walkman AM/FM in mint shape. One of the earlier releases. Total money spent $12. Camera should net me about $35-$40. Small peanuts compared to some of my camera hits but still nice enough. If you can pull 5 or 6 hits like that on a good day, which is not impossible by any means, you can pocket a couple hundred for a day of yard saling and listing 5 or 6 auctions. Hit a unit like you did and it's just bonus, those hits are not common but out there. You just gotta look for em.
Great pick up, Tim! Funny enough I pulled a Marantz 2245 receiver with wood case on Friday for $10! It ain't $750 sorta good but should net me around $300! That same morning I pulled a rare rockabilly 45 for 50 cents that goes for around $1000, but mine is sorta rough shape--i think I can get $500 for it!
I love pulling toys more than anything but often at sales there are no toys worth buying. You are right that it pays to look for all kinds of stuff. I actually find more valuable clothing than anything else. Most folks getting rid of clothes practically give it away!
My parents had that same system (or one really close). There was also an 8-track unit and record player that went with it. Now I have to dig in their basement. ;-)
