Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels is probably rolling over in there grave by now. Lone Ranger needs a blue costume, rather than an ordinary suit and Tonto needs to be a native american. Period. Looks like it might be entertaining, but does not look to be true to the character everyone's grown to know.

I wasn't feeling anything from the photos. But after seeing this trailer, I have renewed interest. It looks like a serious portrayal. And Johnny Depp looks like he is playing the character straight. Very cool. This could be really good. And yes. Depp is part Indian, so the cultural association is sound.Comment

Wait... I thought Depp was playing the Lone Ranger! Haven't looked at the trailer yet but I saw a picture and I don't like the Lone Ranger and Tonto being unrecognizable off the bat.Comment

Depp belongs to no tribe, he states that one of his grandmothers was one fourth Native American but has no idea what kinda Native American...so the dude is guessing, lol.
So him being one eighth Native American is not enough Native American...lol.
They should've cast Rudy Youngblood from Apocalypto, now that's an authentic Native American right there, he is younger than Depp, has the right look, and is a pretty good actor himself.
Ok, some might say, what's the big deal? Acting is acting.
Ok, but then how would some people feel if the Lone Ranger was played by a full Native American?
Exactly.
Tonto should be played by a real Native American.Last edited by Hector; Oct 4, '12, 10:58 PM.sigpicComment

See this is the thing when Johnny Depp is in a movie nowadays, the film becomes more about him then the content. Instead of talking about the actual trailer (isn't the movie based on like the entire premise of Hell On Wheels) or the fact that the Ranger isn't wearing his traditional dudes (Batman has a different costume in every incarnation) all the attention is really on Johnny Depp. I used to like him and to an extent I still do but in the case with art and music and acting, less is more. You gotta create a demand for what you have to offer and although I'll see the movie, he's like a band that puts out too many album in a year (I'm looking at you Ryan Adams). Eventually your gonna get tired of all the output and not focus on the music they're making but just the fact that they're making a whole lot of music and while some of it may be good, there's just too much of it out there for all of it too be good and that's kind of where Depp is now when it comes to him in a film. Instead of "oh wow, Johnny Depp is in this, it's ph look here's Johnny Depp playing another off colored character." We've seen this before (just a few months ago with Dark Shadows) and it get's old. GO do a Gilbert Grape or a Benny and June and then come back to the crazy because with the exception of maybe one movie, the last decade or so it's been all Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and no Edward Sicccorhands.Last edited by spacecaps; Oct 4, '12, 11:04 PM."Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you."Comment

Amazing, seems like the old days were more political correct than nowadays, we are regressing, not progressing lol.sigpicComment

Dude was 100% Italian. It's nothing new. This is just emphasizing what I stated above....that more attention is drawn to the character because it's the Deppster than if it were an actor with a lesser profile.Last edited by spacecaps; Oct 4, '12, 11:13 PM."Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you."Comment

That's pretty much how I am too with some distant ancestor if I trace my linage back far enough and yet I've never once thought of myself as Native American.

American films based on the lives of Benito Juarez (a pure Mexican indigenous person) and Emiliano Zapata (a Mexican mestizo)...were played by Paul Muni and Marlon Brando respectively...I thought both gave great performances...the only thing I took issue with was that both characters spoke in English instead of Spanish (for a more realistic approach)...that actually bothered me more, lol.sigpicComment

I found at that my great-great-grandfather once talked to a guy who sat on a train next to the brother-in-law of a Native American. Do I belong to a tribe now?
I think we all agree that (in this modern age) some parts are better played by actors who have the same nationality of that specific character. It's a question of respect, it's a question of simple logic. Just because Chinese people look like Japanese people, doesn't mean that Jackie Chan should play Emperor Hirohito. You'd probably start WW III as well.
I personally would applaud that a Native American actor acts in an A-list movie and becomes a star..

Hum, Me came across many mountain tops, many sundowns crossed my path, to see light on wall to show kimosabi, found it to be let down, kimosabi, wore red or powder blue clothes, and I Tonto did not look like Crow. Well, if you're going to split hairs, Christian Bale is Welsh and played the American Batman. Hugh Jackman is Australian and played Canadian Wolverine. Heath Leger is also Australian and played the Joker. Catherine Zeta-Jones is Welsh and played the Spanish-American female lead in the Zorro films. I never heard anyone complain about these castings.
I myself would have preferred a Native American play Tonto, as Jay Silverheels and the guy from the 80s movie did...but I'm willing to give Depp a chance. The actors above made me totally forget their backgrounds didn't match their characters.
