1970s Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman also had a positive portrayal of Native Americans.

Fact is Depp has a large fan base draws a huge crowd and sells seats.
        No Depp no film period.
I also had heard he wanted to bring Tonto to the forefront and not have him be the backup to the ranger.

I know I am looking forward to his portrayal of the character, only time will tell if he is a good Tonto.
My father is 50% native American/first nation is that enough?
I know he is pretty pumped about jack sparrow playing Tonto so it can't be that bad.
It obvious Depp is no Jay silverheels but hey, they can't all be Canadian...
That's right I'm more upset they didn't get a canadian to play Tonto...
Exactly, No Depp Possibly no movie and certainly no ticket sales.

I can't picture Depp in a Western (he's too pretty for one thing)...he ain't no Clint Eastwood or Kevin Costner...now those two can do Westerns.

The name "Tonto" isn't very politically correct, either. In Spanish, it means stupid or fool. I don't think the creators of the original radio broadcast intended the name to be offensive, however. I guess it's actually supposed to mean "wild one" in the same Indian language as the work Kemosabe (trusted scout). In some Spanish speaking countries, Tonto's name is changed to Toro (bull).

I was also wondering if the British got upset when Robert Downey Jr. was cast to play Sherlock Holmes?

Remember when Cold Mountain came out you had a Canadian, an Australian, and an Englishman all in lead roles about a movie that takes place during the American Civil War. I don't think it's that big a deal. I just think Depp overshadows the film. It could have been worse...if this were 20 years ago, they'd probably get Lou Diamond Phillips to play Tonto and that would've been tragic on many levels.

Actually Depp was in a Western once before. It was called Dead Man. It was a Terry Gilliam b&w film from 1995....
"On the run after murdering a man, accountant William Blake encounters a strange Indian named "Nobody" who prepares him for his journey into the spiritual world."

Come to think of it, none of the people who played Poirot were actually Belgian!
                          Now I'm outraged!!!!

On the plus side: at least they didn't ask JCVD.
His acting would be the only true crime committed in the story...

^Yeah, but he's Vulcan on his MOTHER'S side, which is totally wrong for the character.

                              Sean Connery as James Bond?
                              It's absurd I tell you!!!

Amazing how threads get derailed just like trains in the wild west

The cinematography looks amazing, the scenery breathtaking, and the two actors playing the leads look exactly like a modern-day adaptation of the characters. I could care less if Depp is 1/8th Native American - he is going to bring the beloved character of Tonto to life on the big screen.

I cannot wait to see this.
