I know I don't post often in here, but I needed to get some opinions in on this situation.
We all value our collections differently. Some items we have are just that- items. They hold no value to anyone but ourselves (and maybe a few others) and the 'general' toy collecting world consider 'crap'. LOL You know- the type of items I'm talking about. The ones with sentimental value only. Then of course, any 'real' toy collector has items in their collection that hold value to themselves and others. Within this section there are the ones a collector is willing to part with and ones they are not.
So for the opinion I'm asking for, the collection has all 3 different sections (the sentimental 'crap', ones able to part with, and those with value but cannot part with).
Someone I have known for years and years has a wife & kids, a house, a job, the normal bills + college loans (the dreaded things they are to all who have them!) and a toy collection that fills one room of their house from floor to near ceiling with no walking room. There's more of the collection in a couple other rooms of their house as well.
They have talked about getting rid of some of their lesser wanted items from time to time, but never got around to doing it.
More bills are coming up short because of the economy and things going up in price (electric, food, gas- all slicing into others)- you all know how that's been.
Well my friend's wife needed something for physical/health and they had no savings for it. They could get it for about $200 (found out later) and the longer it would take to get it the worse the wife would get. His wife wasn't sleeping, was in pain all the time, and couldn't function because they couldn't get it.
This is what I need the opinion on:
If this was you and it was your spouse would you sell part of your collection to get the item they needed medically/health-wise? Or do you consider those items off-limits when it comes to household and/or medical expenses.
It wound up taking 7 weeks for his wife to get the item she needed. She most likely will be facing surgery because of the damage the wait took on her body. But with how household expenses were there was no way to get it sooner out of 'regular' household funds.
I talked to my friend and he told me that his collection was that- his collection. He was entitled to have them, he worked hard for them, and he deserved to be able to keep them and not have to sell any to help with any household/medical expenses. The only possible reason for selling any of them would be to pay for something different to go into the collection or simply because they didn't want that item anymore- but the $ from the sale of it would be kept separate and only go back into the collection in the future.
Now the wife doesn't work outside the home, but when she does sell something or gets a gift of money the majority of the monies always go back into the bills or items for the house or her immediate family. She rarely buys things just for herself and doesn't have any collection of any value or anything like that.
So what are your thoughts? Should he have sold items (or sell items) from the collection to get the item needed or go to the behind bills?
P.S. I'm not giving my opinion for a reason- I want to know what yours are without the prejudice of mine in the question. I was just wondering if any or all of you had the same mode of thought on your collections.
:-) Thanks in advance for any input here!
