How do you value your collection?

I know I don't post often in here, but I needed to get some opinions in on this situation.

We all value our collections differently. Some items we have are just that- items. They hold no value to anyone but ourselves (and maybe a few others) and the 'general' toy collecting world consider 'crap'. LOL You know- the type of items I'm talking about. The ones with sentimental value only. Then of course, any 'real' toy collector has items in their collection that hold value to themselves and others. Within this section there are the ones a collector is willing to part with and ones they are not.

So for the opinion I'm asking for, the collection has all 3 different sections (the sentimental 'crap', ones able to part with, and those with value but cannot part with).

Someone I have known for years and years has a wife & kids, a house, a job, the normal bills + college loans (the dreaded things they are to all who have them!) and a toy collection that fills one room of their house from floor to near ceiling with no walking room. There's more of the collection in a couple other rooms of their house as well.

They have talked about getting rid of some of their lesser wanted items from time to time, but never got around to doing it.

More bills are coming up short because of the economy and things going up in price (electric, food, gas- all slicing into others)- you all know how that's been.

Well my friend's wife needed something for physical/health and they had no savings for it. They could get it for about $200 (found out later) and the longer it would take to get it the worse the wife would get. His wife wasn't sleeping, was in pain all the time, and couldn't function because they couldn't get it.

This is what I need the opinion on:

If this was you and it was your spouse would you sell part of your collection to get the item they needed medically/health-wise? Or do you consider those items off-limits when it comes to household and/or medical expenses.

It wound up taking 7 weeks for his wife to get the item she needed. She most likely will be facing surgery because of the damage the wait took on her body. But with how household expenses were there was no way to get it sooner out of 'regular' household funds.

I talked to my friend and he told me that his collection was that- his collection. He was entitled to have them, he worked hard for them, and he deserved to be able to keep them and not have to sell any to help with any household/medical expenses. The only possible reason for selling any of them would be to pay for something different to go into the collection or simply because they didn't want that item anymore- but the $ from the sale of it would be kept separate and only go back into the collection in the future.

Now the wife doesn't work outside the home, but when she does sell something or gets a gift of money the majority of the monies always go back into the bills or items for the house or her immediate family. She rarely buys things just for herself and doesn't have any collection of any value or anything like that.

So what are your thoughts? Should he have sold items (or sell items) from the collection to get the item needed or go to the behind bills?

P.S. I'm not giving my opinion for a reason- I want to know what yours are without the prejudice of mine in the question. I was just wondering if any or all of you had the same mode of thought on your collections.

:-) Thanks in advance for any input here!

Nothing is more important than family and friends -- certainly not collectible junk no matter what it is.

Stuff can be replaced. People can't.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I really hope this is someone you know and not actually you....not saying it is but dude, this story is a huge "what the fudge"??!! Anyone who puts collectible crap over their wifes health seriously needs a slap...no stupid toys, collectibles or anything should come before your family and resonsibilities. I have a collection that i love to death but if the money was needed for an emergency it would be gone in a flash without thinking twice about it.....always remember everything you have is temporary anyway, you cant take it with you and we're all gonna check out of this world sooner or later.....how selfish can a person be? your wife? DOUBLE U TF??!!

You know in a situation like this I'd feel great that my collection could fund something I couldn't afford any other way to help someone I loved.

                  Sell the stuff.

Exactly, this is a question that shouldn't even have to be asked.

In light of the situation this is an absolutely ridiculous statement.

Collectibles should NEVER be worth more than a loved one's health. Period. I don't care how awesome or rare or cool a collectible(s) is, family members first.

I love my collectibles, but there isn't even one single thing I wouldn't sell for a family members health if needed, immediately. In fact I figure in the future I probably will have to sell large portions of my stuffs as we all age and medical expenses are ridiculous. If my parents ever get into trouble, I'd rather sell my goodies than have them loose the house they've worked their whole lives for.
Fine by me. I'd rather spend more time with people I love than have STUFF.

I'd keep some of the sentimental items, but yeah - I'd sell the collection if it came to that. 10 years ago I sold some of my best comics to raise $$ for a down payment on my house. It kind of sucked, but I don't regret it...and I haven't bothered to re-buy the books I sold, so obviously it wasn't that traumatic. Even high-end sentimental stuff could secure a loan at a pawn shop, for people who'd want it back.

I went back and reread the original post...it occurs to me that the wife owns roughly 1/2 of the collection, depending on what state they live in....not sure why the husband is willing to take that risk, rather than just selling $200 worth of it.
