    >I don't think kids today are going to by/buy this
    >Today's kids never experienced stuff like that...

I'd disagree on this one. There's ALWAYS been someone out there to be scared of. Sure, N. Korea isn't as good a baddie as old school Russia, but they've served the role of "evil empire" for a while now. Remember the "Type-0 Dong" threat?

*snicker* Type-0 Dong.... Anyhoo; it's not about the invaders. It's about how awesome it is that the kids are kickin' schmenge.... "just like me and MY friends would if anyone attacked the school! And I'd get a machine gun, and rocket launcer, and grenades...." That was the appeal of the original too.

    >at least in the original they let you know there was a small nuclear exchange (and evidently effective) first before the mass invasion

Holee smokes! You're the first person I've ever met who defended the plausibility of the film. Neat! Still; even the nuke idea has a lot of implausibilities. Overall the original was all about the fight scenes; the plot was superfluous. Just like this one. I don't think.... overall.... the new one will be any better or worse, except that we're not all 14 any more and I think that's the biggest mitigating factor for enjoying something like this.

    >The premise only works with Canada as the baddie.

He knows! How did he discover "Plan eh?"

Canada as an attacker might actually work if it was done right.

        Here's my premise

The US does something really stupid to P off the whole world.
        The UN attacks the US

Make the viewer not sure who to rute for -- the US ? or the UN ?

Te original is classic in many ways. You just can't remake classic.

I think you need the fear already in place for the fantasy to work. I agree that kids today have tons of fears - I still don't think kids are going to relate to this particular scenario.

The original could be sold to kids in a single line - "Russians invade and teenagers fight them" - this one is way too convoluted and they will need a whole history lesson to even make sense of it.

It will be like "Here's a map, and this half of this little thing here is N. Korea, they're really more of a monarchy/dictatorship, but they call themselves communist and years ago we referred to communists as "red" and that's what the title is referring to..."

These remakes really leave a bad taste in my mouth (I'm referring to the latest Total Recall as well).
These movies are beloved time capsule movies and belong in a certain age, the plots don't translate well to the world of today. And they were GOOD and iconic movies in the first place, not bad movies that needed remakes.
Besides, we've ALREADY seen the plot and know what's basically going to happen, if I wanted to re-see that I'd pop the original DVD in (although every movie trailer of today does the same thing). I want to see dangass NEW movies, constarn it.

If Canada invaded, I'd just invite them into my living room and we'd crack open a brewski and watch some movies.

I actually liked the trailer. Love the original too but always open to a decent action flick

I don't think so. "Those are the bad guys" is all you really need. The original was pretty convoluted too.... how many of US knew what the deal with Cuba was? The plot in almost any action movie is just there to provide the most basic of excuses to facilitate suspension of disbelief. It's all about the action, which needs no explanation.

                  >These movies are beloved time capsule movies and belong in a certain age, the plots don't translate well to the world of today.

Well.... they do, but they don't. Most of them are pretty generic to begin with, so the core elements will always apply; but the things that make something like Red Dawn what it was are linked to a certain time. You can take the name, but it's not the same film.... just a reasonable facimile 'cos it's wrapped around a few similar core concepts.

                  >I want to see dangass NEW movies, constarn it.

THIS I agree with wholeheartedly! It kinda feels like everyone gave up after 1989, so all we get are the same handful of characters, franchaises and stories over and over; or ripoffs. I'm reminded of the Cracked article, where they point out that we're on the downslope from the media glut of the last few decades, so almost everything is derivative 'cos that's all we know. Even something like "The Expendables" which looks new plays off the last twenty years. It's an action film featuring the stars of the last 30 years worth of action films. The kick requires you to be familiar with those three decades, and everyone is.... even if they were 3 at the time.

                  >If Canada invaded, I'd just invite them into my living room and we'd crack open a brewski and watch some movies.

He knows "Plan deux!" Who's been talking?

It's productions like this that look so bad on paper, it has to be asked... WHY? The original Red Dawn addressed the concerns people had back then about the Soviets invading the US. It was a cool hypothetical with the then-barely-known Patrick Swayze starring just before his breakout hit Dirty Dancing. I don't seem to know about any real time concerns for North Korea. The son of the now defunct leader is just blowing smoke. And his deceased father was hilarious with his hyperbole. It had added humor because he was a diehard Elvis Presley fan.

It would have been better if the porno industry made a parody ... Red Dong

Edited to add on a semi serious note .... Do kids even know what "red" means nowadays ?

My guess is no. I don't think Communism is on the minds of teens much today. Fortunately for the movie's branding kids might think "Red" stands for blood or something. Who knows. I think it's doubtful this movie can do well either way.

A few years ago I was hanging out with my (at that time) 16 year-old sister in-law and "War Games" came on. I thought it would be a fun movie for us to watch together - but the entire movie was over her head. She didn't understand about the Cold War, she didn't understand the global threat of nuclear war - and when I explained these things to her she just dismissed it by saying that people were really dumb back then. Oh, and anything related to 80s computers was insane to her too - so she got zero dramatic effect from that movie. When I put it on I would have guessed it was a fairly basic adventure story about a couple of likable teenage heroes that would be somewhat universal. Nope.

                          I always loved War Games

I can picture young person not getting it though.

It's weird, it seems like OUR generation was the last generation to be brought up with knowledge of the past.

Even though these movie genre's are NOT our generation we still enjoy ...

                          Little Rascals
                          Old Police shows

                          We enjoy music from 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's etc

Kid's today have been brought up single minded.

If it didn't happen in front of their eyes they dont care about it.

Problem is, OUR generation raised these kids and made them what they are.
