I can why they'd put a 'have to sell' clause in, as it's a show about horders downsizing to benefit their life. Otherwise people'd get on the show just to show off their collections on TV, without really intending to 'be helped'. But I don't necessarily like the negativity aimed at the collector from loved ones sometimes. Although the end of the 2nd one was really neat with the present the family got the lady. That was sweet.

The second episode was definitely better than the first, and the host was more positive and affirming. I think they just kicked off the series with a really bad episode. The people in the 2nd one really did need help. When your collectibles are dangerously stacked all up the stairs and on EVERY living surface, and you won't let ANYBODY touch them, or it's completely taken over family members closets, hampering their living space, a tad adjustment is needed.

I do like the message about sell stuff you don't really want to pay for something you really DO want. I do that ALL the time. It kinda bugs me though when she encourages them to just keep the valuable older stuff and sell off all the newer 'depreciating' stuff. Collector's don't always think that way, and don't (or shouldn't) collect just so they have money stashed away for later. I have alot of newer figures I value much more than some of the older (actually, I think I've already sold the older I didn't care for to PAY for those newer awesome ones). She SHOULD stress keep the ones you love, not the ones worth the most down the line. )~(
But it IS a buy-resell show, so meh.

Anyone catch this last ep with Transformers enthusiast "Dah-veed"? What would that (38yo) guy do if his parents stopped bankrolling everything? Yeah, not sure I'd wanna appear on TV looking that pathetic.. his friend kept trying to throw reality into the mix.

The formula of these shows is getting pretty tedious.. meet collector, collector details their collection and its meaning, after cajoling they agree to sell some stuff, there's a big second-thoughts and freak out scene as the sale starts, then a happy ending as the collector sells, learns a life lesson and is rewarded.

Normally I would agree - but that guy had to sell his 2,000 books all at once or he wasn't going to get rid of them. He could not stand the idea of people "pilfering" through his books.

Going to a dealer to sell the whole kit and kaboodle was the only way it was going to work with him. He got a Near Mint Hulk 181 in trade (better investment potential by far) and still keeps nearly 28,000 comic books.

As it turns out, that 37 year old with the Transformers stuff who supposedly lives off his parents actually runs his own production company as it turns out. So either he is lying on his Facebook profile or the show is.

The transformers guy is a dweeb. He has posted 1400 youtube videos, just look for any toy review, he has done one for about every toy. He does all these reviews that are pretty annoying (never seems to take a breath, or pause during a run on sentence). If you watch a couple of them that talk about his collection updating, you can see the house looks pre hoarders. His life looks worse than the 40 Year old virgin. I think the guy is doing the show for the exposure, to try and give press to his "production" company, although I am pretty assured that this will come back to haunt him and leave him with egg on his face.

As for the comic book guy, he never traded the 2000 for the 181 hulk. If you go to the scifi website, it tells how the people have adjusted after the show. The comic book guy pretty much rips the whole senerio that took place.

^ Well, then he is a dufus in my opinion for not making that trade. It looks like the dealer would have made out, but he would sit on many of those issues for a long, long time. Most would probably end up in the .50 box.

The Hulk 181 is one of the hottest books right now and will only go up in value. Comics are not like baseball cards that fluctuate. They steadily increase in value over time. He should have made that trade. That book is getting harder and harder to find in decent shape. LOTS of demand and not near enough supply.

I agree. If there was some way that does not involve appearing on television, for someone to offer me a Hulk 181 in 9.0 condition, and also lug away 2,000 modern age quarter bin books like Quasar and Web of Spider-man, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I think she really underestimated the fact that he's not into it for the money or "value", but the love of the writing and stories. Her suggestion to get into Golder or Silver Age collecting was way off base because those eras do not resonate with his reading patterns.

He loves Walt Simonson, John Byrne, Peter David and James Robinson. I can get behind that, and relate because I collect based around creators as well. David's Captain Marvel run is not going to appreciate in value, and they are quarter bin books, but he enjoys them, so he should keep them.

Although here is the approach I might have taken since he is a reader (although he does seem to be a floppy comics purist)... trade that full run of Starman Comics for those beautiful new hardcover collected book editions... and get James Robinson to sign and personalize them for him. They display nice on bookshelves rather than long boxes, which any comic collector knows are a pain in the ***. There are also lovely collected editions of Walt Simonson's Thor and most of Byrne's 80's Marvel and DC work as well. So much easier to access and reread than the old school newsprint versions.

I'd have also suggested trading the standard stacking long boxes for drawer boxes... and depending on whether you can afford them... perhaps even the higher quality corrugated plastic ones or even those wonderful wooden/plastic drawer units that you often see in comic book shops these days.

It felt a bit forced, but I enjoyed the appearance of James Robinson. I thought that was very well played by the producers of the show... particularly since Robinson is a collector as well, and that aspect played into Starman Jack Knight's character.

The show really upset me at first, but it's actually started to help me begin a dialogue around my collecting priorities. I think the host really has a good point about what she calls the curating aspects of the collectors she's been dealing with thus far.

HAte to say it, but I enjoy the show....it looks like the trade for the Hulk was a good trade. He seemed to have a collection of very average books. I don't agree with everything, but I do like the show

The comic book guy really seemed like a giant baby, his remarks on the syfy website made me dislike him further. She bent over backwards to please him too.

I love the stories in comics too, that's why I have a bookcase full of trades that my wife and I keep in our living room.

I went to syfy to see the behind the scenes. And I was shocked (maybe too strong a word) that the comic guy didn't make the trade, so when the cameras were off he was like "nawwwwww I change my mind". From what they were saying his collection was all about quanity and not quality. Lets be honest we all have some personal things we collect that would never be worth anything...but there is not a "real" comic collector that wouldn't trade a ton of "basic" comics for that hulk. To be honest I knew he wasn't a true collector when she asked him about silver and bronze age books and he said he "doesn't believe in that".....I was like huh?

One of the things I like about the show is that she tries to teach them to distinguish between being a collector and being a mindless accumulator. Get rid of all this crap and get some really nice pieces.

Agreed, it's the same advice I've given folks including myself.

Ten years ago I was pretty much like the GI Joe guy, I had stuff piled everywhere! Then my ultimate grail came up and I was forced to choose, many aspiring collections were sold that year.....

Last nite's show was.. odd. Enjoyed the "weirdness" collector, he had some fantastic stuff and really did have an "eye" for interesting, bizarre things, tho I'm not sure how the Fonzie glasses they kept showing fit in

The other storyline seemed highly contrived.. dweeb has a hot g/f but she plays second fiddle to his toys? Then he sets up a bunch of modern clearance toys at a toy shop and they sell like hotcakes?

                                I ain't buying it.
