I know exactly what you mean and I also used to agree with you that the unused portion was "untapped potential" or whatever. You might be right. Really. Now here's where I argue against it: it's like saying we're only using 10% of roads at any given time. As I'm driving, the space between me and the car ahead of me is unused, then--nope--I'm at that point now, so it's being used and the space where I was is now unused. What this means is that really not much is going unused, if that makes any sense. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_percent_of_brain_myth

Also, just talk to a psychic. They are not more evolved than you--not even close, no matter how nebulously metaphysical they speak. That's a sales pitch with the ones that are running a scam and nonsensical hippie talk with the ones that are scamming themselves into thinking they are special. They are not using more of their brain than you. However, they do know some tricks you don't know, and that gives them an edge in this situation. Take them into your area of expertise, and you would dominate them without trying.

If we truly only used 10% of our brains we would almost certainly never have evolved to the creatures we are today.

The "we only use 10% of our brains" is pure urban legend.

If you do a Google search on "10% brain" all of the relevant hits on the first page are discussing the fact that the notion that humans use only 10% of their brains is a myth. I took this myth down myself 12 years ago. It is a fun myth to debunk, and it a good hook for the discussion of brain functi

I think the people who wrote these articles were only using 10% of their brain....

But it's interesting reading material, nonetheless.
I predict with 100% certainty that we will be speaking about this subject again....

I guess it's possible. People do have gifts that defy explanation (like those with savant type gifts). I do think that those who might have it are not your $20 palm readers or those who would pick lottery numbers.

I'm not totally convinced it exists but don't discount the idea either.

I think psychics are fake and just pray on people who are weak for some reason or another.

                            They're basically evil magicians

A psychic once told my sister she would live to 74 .... she died at 57

They're all ripoff artists and any of them that seem REAL just havent been exposed yet

My mom (who's mom and dad came from the old country) called them all Gypsies

They never used to word "psychic" in the old days

I guess maybe just to clarify; I think the question was meant to ask whether or not there was a belief that some people possess psychic ability vs. believing in those claiming to be psychic. I don't want to put words in the original poster's mouth but that is what I presumed was the question when I answered it.

I asked a fortune teller before about the lottery thing and was told they can't use their "powers" for personal gain, to which I responded, "But...you're charging me $20 right?"

My favorites though, are the ghost hunting psychics on TV, usually overweight women with names like Brandi, who sense vibrations and see orbs everywhere.
