I don't think it was a mistake unless you're a Superman guy who wants to keep it yourself. I really don't know the supposed "market value" on something like this or whether it's super rare or valuable, but it's one of those items that I personally like and would probably pay in the $30-$50 range for just because it's a 30+ year old Superman store display with cool Christopher Reeve graphics, assuming it's near poster size and there hasn't been some warehouse find on them.
I can't imagine there are a ton of those things floating around, and the one pictured on Flickr would look really great in a display with the glasses.
