Late 2001 I believe I bought a minty T2 Batman which I still own. Though I later saw his leg was broken and had to replace it! Got a Robin to go with him shortly after that.
I signed up in May of 2001 to buy a few Redline Hotwheels cars. I too got sniped and ended up at the bidding board to learn how to use the site better. Not only did I start winning auctions but I also found my (now) wife there. We will celebrating 8 years of marriage at the end of this month. Of course she cost far more then the Hotwheels did.

My first eBay purchase was an Evel Knievel stunt cycle in 1997. I still have the original one from my childhood, but it is missing both sides of the engine, and busted up. Still runs though.
It was Cobra Commander with the silver face plate. I had wanted it my whole life. I had the hooded CC that you send away for but never the regular one. When I learned of ebay's existence, that was the first thing on my list.
remember when you could leave feedback for anyone on ebay, even if you never had a transaction with them. those were the days.
My first purchase was a beat up AJ figure in 1998. I was just testing with something cheap as I didn't actually believe someone would send me something after sending them a money order.
I can honestly not remember.
It was in the mid-90s when I began, and the memory is buried under the onslaught and avalanche of awesome oddities that followed in a fevered pitch.
Sadly, my old computer with buying records crashed, and this was BEFORE the day and age of Paypal, where you had to pay with money orders!
I'm sure it was an 80s toy or the like though.
I remember the old stand-outs like Mr. T tv tray, Max Headroom fingertronic puppet, Golden Girls palace, and heaven knows what else. That's when I started selling, to make up for the buying.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

First purchase on eBay was back in 1998, when I was College Freshman. I just discovered computers and the internet, and I remember I got a 1977 Bachman-Turner Overdrive "Freeways" songbook from some bloke in NY.
I used to keep a log of everything I bought and how much I paid for it, but have since lost it. I'm pretty sure my first item was also a T1 Tarzan and this was probably 1998.
