I have, too, Rallygirl. I know the main female star was excellent in Winter's Bone (if you haven't seen that, you should), but I just don't know enough about this to make a call on it. I will probably check it out once it's on DVD or something, because judging from some of the posts here, I might not be giving it a fair shake.

Up until my son mentioned it to me this past week I had no clue as to what the hoopla was all about. Curiosity is peeked so I think I'll have to check it out. There must be something to it if one hundred fifty five million George Washington's showed up for opening weekend.Comment

I said in another post that I liked the movie a lot trying to stay within a PG-13 rating (but I did read the book and enjoyed the book as well). Agreed, this is not even close to "Twilight" and maybe I did enjoy the movie more because I read the book months ago.
It definitely doesn't fit in the chick flick category. I think the female audience is enjoying seeing a strong female protagonist."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

This movie blew up as predicted. Highest opening for a non-sequel, behind the last Potter and Dark Knight. Has already made more in one weekend than any previous Lionsgate release.
My wife and son saw it this weekend and loved it. My wife really liked the novels, and thought they adapted it well. I haven't heard anyone disappointed with it who has seen it. Good word of mouth will keep this thing chugging for quite a while, I think.

Wife got back from her latest business trip in Japan, so we ran out and watched it since we're both into the books.
More than Running Man and or Battle Royal, what makes this so contemporary in terms of SCIFI and what it tells us about ourselves, is the fact that it does really have something to say in this age of 99vs1%, and reality tv media manipulation/distraction/exploitation/sponsorship/celebrity. Plus a love story/action movie at the heart of it that doesn't pander to the overwrought tropes of either genre.
The first book really is the best one, and the movie sticks close to it... And deviates only for exposition which sticks out like a sore thumb.
I was actua..y kind of surprised at how the first half kind of felt like a seventies SCIFI movieComment

Saw it friday, was an ok movie. kinda slow at times. i thought the main girl would have been more of a fighter. Glad i saw it at matinee price."Hang on Lady... We go for a RIDE!" - Shorty to Willie Scott.Best movie line from Indiana Jones & the Temple Of DoomComment

I think the main point is the fact that she ISN'T Aeon Flux or Trinity or Milla Johovich in Resident Evil.
Her character is a hunter. Granted slow and methodical doesn't necessarily make for action set pieces. I actually do appreciate the fact that there is a degree of realism here in the way most hand to hand or weaponed combat normally goes down, Not like most Kung Fu movies. Districts 1 and 2 are all trained to take out their less skilled opponents quickly, as we saw in the first scene where they stepped off the platform. The one scene with some license was the girl with the knives gloating over Katniss... Which of course was designed to wring some dramatic tension and suspense out of the situation. ditto the end fight.Comment

Agreed. Her character was not a trained fighter; just a normal human who happened to be very good with a bow and arrow from poaching food in the woods. I think the book mentioned that none of the Tributes were supposed to be trained fighters and it was even illegal to do so, but some of the districts did it anyway and the Capitol turned a blind eye toward it which is why most of the champions were from Districts 1 and 2."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

I haven't gotten to see the movie yet, but my copy of the latest issue of Rolling Stone came in the mail today and Jennifer Lawrence is on the cover and its a stunning shot.
Just a beautiful young woman.
Warner's might just need to get some black hair dye and sign her up for Wonder Woman, although I'm not sure of her height.Comment
