He was the greatest concept artist in Hollywood history. He deserves to become a Force Ghost.

He's another reason the original Star Wars movies are better than the prequels.

Wow that really sucks. I have The Art of Star Wars & The Art of Return of the Jedi, and his artwork in them is definitely my favorite. I also loved the fact that some of his designs got made into Star Wars figures. What a loss.

I'm sorry to hear about his passing. I have several books containing his contributions. I'm having a hard time fighting the urge to go thru my library and look again at his artwork (and others) contained there in. Sad to say on my part, that I always had easier time remembering the other name associated with Film design artwork (Ie Meade and Cobb).
Thanks for reminding me of this great artist!

I had those portfolios when I was a kid. Frankly, I was a bit confused
                  by it all.

It took me many years to understand the link between McQuarrie's
paintings and the actual movies' designs, but once I did see that link,
                  I was quite impressed.

Indeed it was an early production lesson well-taught, if not exactly
                  well-learned.

Big part of my early fandom!

                  Bless! RIP!

Some great images of Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for the 1987 Masters Of The Universe movie:
