rip Mr. McQ.
some of my favorite things from my bookshelf were my portfolios for the SW and ESB movies along with the sketchbooks. I used to spend a good amount of time staring at the things that almost were and filling in the spaces around the edges of the pics with my imagination.
I was SUPER happy when Hasbro honored Ralph with the series a few years back and, although I am a little over the 1:18 modern Star Wars world, I would not want to give those up for anything.
Thank you sir for the amazing drawings and inspiration.Comment

Me too. I wore out that SW Portfolio, it fascinated and inspired me. He was a vastly important artist to countless other artists. He made great work and had a great life, can't ask for more than that. This profile is no longer active.Comment

I believe that his vision of SW was actually more of an influence on the actual look than George Lucas' initial input.
McQuarrie more or less created the looks of Stormtroopers, etc....

McQuarrie had an background in N.A.S.A. technical illustration if I remember correctly. He was BIG part of what made Star Wars look so cool. I didnt have the whole portfolio but I did have one print from ROTJ of the Emperor using the force on Luke.
One of things I use to stare at was the corridors from the death star. They actually looked like they could go on past what he had painted.
Did he ever do any more movie work?

>While he will be forever known for influencing the look and style of Star Wars, McQuarrie also set the template for Battlestar Galactica and produced art for Cocoon (for which he won an Oscar), Total Recall, E.T., Masters of the Universe, Nightbreed (!?!) and Batteries Not Included.
>McQuarrie’s art also influenced the mothership in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and he was even called upon to illustrate that great image from Indiana’s book depicting the power of the Ark of the Covenant.Comment

So he basically worked on films till around 1993 or so. Jurrasic Park was the last one. I didnt know he had worked on all these!

RMcQ's work on the original Battlestar Galactica which is not seen very often:
Ralph McQuarrie Concept Paintings | Battlestar Galactica
Your eyes do not deceive you. That is a Buck Rogers Starfighter but it was originally intended as a Colonial Viper:
RMQ's design for the refurbished Enterprise; Star Trek-The Motion Picture. The the movie Enterprise's design was eventually based on a painting by artist Mike Minor this looks lot like the Next Generation E designed by Andrew Probert:
Film Sketchr: Warp Back In Time To The Lost Star Trek Concept Art By Ralph McQuarrie and Ken Adams
Mike Minor's painting as seen waaayyyy back in Starlog #25:
