The first album I ever bought on my was a Monkees Greatest Hits I had to mail away for. I saved my allowance for weeks! Then came anxiously sitting through Monkees reruns for 4-6 weeks until it finally came. It had a pretty basic cover with a sketch (I think) of the band and their logo in red (again, if memory serves). I played the heck out of it and still pretty much know all the words to each of those songs!

Sad. It's fun to listen to that bubble gum rock every now and then and Jones had one of the genre's best voices.

        Thanks for the links, spacecaps.

Sad news....I loved the show, the songs, his singing "Girl" to Marcia on the Brady Bunch.

              Definitely will be missed.

I had recently replaced my tapes w/CD's. Really like The Monkees tunes. Davy always looked the youngest out of them all that you wouldn't think he might pass away. I also appreciate Reuters spot-on reporting. This is the most accurate description of the band:

                http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...81S1T520120229

"But Jones gained stardom after answering a casting call for a new TV series being created about the zany misadventures of four Beatles-like rock musicians called The Monkees. Two members of the group, Nesmith and Tork, were actual musicians with performing and recording experience, while Jones and Dolenz were primarily actors who dabbled in music.

Although disparaged by critics as the "Pre-Fab Four" for the manufactured way in which the band came together, the group proved to be adept performers who were eventually given control over their own recordings."

That makes me very sad. The Monkees were such a bright spot in childhood, I loved them to death. I even have the hits CD, which I still play (rarely tho) when I want a perk up.

                          That was far too young.

Big Monkees fan as a kid, and I still enjoy their music from time to time. Davy always seemed like the most approachable of the Monkees on interview and biography shows.

I feel like I lost a childhood friend. RIP.
