As I consider Shawshank Redemption the best film of all time, it has to be the top.
1) Shawshank Redemption
The Stand was simply amazing. Amazing.
2) The Stand
It. I loved every second of it and would watch it over and over. I didn't even mind the giant spider, which kinda sucked. LOL
3) It
The three listed above, I can watch at any time and be thrilled. Popcorn movies with quality. They can be background noise or actual viewing enjoyment.
That being said, there are plenty of honorable mentions:
Misery (my god this book was amazing, and the movie held it's own)
Christine (my god this book was amazing. So many little things the movie missed out on)
Silver Bullet (this movie was really a fun watch. Cycle Of The Wereewolf is an extremely fun read and Berni Wrightson is unparalleled in his horror art....ok....Neal Adams is damn close)
The Night Flier (i think was King), was fun and entertaining for what it was. No cinematic prowess here, however, the lead actor is fun to watch and I enjoyed the plot.
I enjoyed the Dead Zone, however my favorite parts were when he was solving the crimes....Once he went into "hiding", I was like....meh. Boring. Never read the book.
Shining. Hated the movie. Book was fantabulous. I think Kubrick sucks. Clockwork Orange was an anomaly, the best part of Full Metal Jacket (1st half) had to have been directed by someone else, and then Kubrick took over to finish....which is why the second half sucked. I can keep going. Basically Kubrick sucks.
The Langoliers. Anything with Balky from that stupid show in the 80's sucks. This one held true to that theory.Comment

My favorite adaptation of a Stephen King novel so far has been "THE STAND", but that's probably because it's his favorite book of mine, too.
For the next two, it's a toss-up between THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE.
THE MIST is probably my favorite theatrical release of a King adaptation in recent years, but that's because I think that King and Frank Darabont are one and the same person!!sigpic Oh then, what's this? Misery.
Oddly enough, none of these can be put into the category "horror". His best work has been outside of that category.
I stopped reading King when his stories started becoming so grim and depressing that it just wasn't fun anymore..

I had forgot about The Stand. Very good mini series (better book)
Stand by me is a fantastic movie.
It depends on who makes the movie.
Oh dont let me forget Misery. Kathy Bates did a really good job in it.Comment

The Mist is indeed very good, too. That was a great story...
I didn't like the movie version of the Shining all that much. Nicholson was the wrong choice. Was anybody surprised when Jack went crazy? No. They should have picked a "normal" guy...that slowly went mad....

As far as Misery goes, even though Kathy Bates is great, I was quite disappointed in it. I felt like it was a cutesy version for the masses, I liked the more graphic gritty book alot more.Last edited by Splitty; Jan 27, '12, 4:15 PM.Comment

I never thought the strength of the movie depended on being surprised when Jack goes crazy though. The movie sets the audience up for that right from the beginning, both with the history of the last caretaker going crazy and the revelation that Jack was abusive.
To me, the best suspense is knowing what to dread ahead of time - and the movie works on that level perfectly.
I've never read the book though, so I'm not comparing it - just giving my take on the movie on it's own.Comment
