I wish the best for all of you guys and gals. If the power and internet does get knocked out do us all a solid and let us know your okay once its back up. A roll call thread would probably be a really good idea. Hold on to your hats everybody.

Hitting the Jersey Shore a little harder. It doesn't really get going until after midnight here in NYC.

Its hard to compare to Gloria because she was stronger, but she went out to sea. We got lots a rain and some heavy winds from her. If Irene hits, it will most likely head directly over Nassau County. We haven't had a hurricane hit Manhattan directly since 1821!

Wind speeds down to 80 mph as of the last update. The media seems bound and determined to make this storm into something that it's not.
She is a big one though, breezy here today on the west coast of Florida.

it going to be bad no matter what. my heart goes out to those that have lost loved ones from this monster storm, most especially tonight, i am thinking about poor little boy in Viorginaia who was killed by a tree coming through his apartment building. 11 years old

^Yeah, I saw that in the news, too. Very horrible.

The storm is pretty much over Maryland right now and we have been having constant wind and rains here. The big concern is not the storm itself, but the ground being so saturated that trees come down.
                      It's all good!

I've been through worse, but it ain't over yet.

1:36 am in Queens/Bayside, NY. The wind has picked up so you can hear the howling more frequently now. The rain is covering the window like I'm going thru a car wash. The trees and the powerlines are swaying a bit . Also noticed many people did not park under the trees outside which seem to drop big branches in bad weather. The internet spec. winds at 24-26 mph but can gust as high as 49 mph. A great comfort it's not anything near 80 mph but still dicey.

In Brooklyn I experienced exactly what johnmiic described an hour ago. But right now it’s mainly wind. Little rain. I have a funny feeling the crazy stuff is in a few hours. But for mainland NYC it should be a heavy rainstorm. For the Rockaways and Long Island, hunker down. Also, if you are in NYC listening to Michael Bloomberg attempt Spanish on TV reports, this Twitter feed is for you. The guy is so forced and painful it’s like he only knows Spanish from ordering ‘the help’ around, “Hola Newo Yorko! El stormo grande is mucho dangeroso!”

parts of Long Island are already flooded frmo what they are showing on the news. we are having very heavy rainfall still, started last night at some point and has not let up. we have not started on the heavy winds yet. they are saying the storm was weaker than expected when it made in landfall in NJ. be safe everyone

Irene made landfall in Little Egg Harbor, NJ as a Cat 1 just before 6am. Tornado warnings have popped up and gone down, as expected. So far, this has pretty much gone along to predictions so I assume the storm will hit eastern NYC or (more likely) Nassau around 8-9am.
