are the shotguns from Walmart any good?

D, the 12 is fine, just be prepared for what comes with it. It's got a helluva recoil, it's loud as hell and it's going to do mass damage. My advice is to go out to a field somewhere, private property, and practice with ear protection. You need to get used to what it's capable of before you go to use it when it really, really counts. I hope that never happens. Just go blow the crap out of some coffee cans for an afternoon.

Growing up in a hunting family I've fired just about every legal firearm available. I've never heard of a 15 gauge. Twelve is the most powerful commonly used shotgun shell. I've seen 10 guage occasionally but I don't think anyone still makes ammunition for it. My personal favorite is the .20 gauge. I have an Ithaca over/under double barrel that is eerily accurate. You can get different loads for various ranges and targets.

For home defense, go with the widest spread. I doubt anyone would really want to kill an intruder if they can help it. A spread shell will distribute pellets in a wide perimeter that will wound but unlikey kill within 10 feet. A tight-spread shell or a slug, at that same range, will remove the intruder's torso while his legs kick around on your kitchen floor.

I don't think animals like skunks, opossums, etc. are generally aggressive in nature toward other animals and especially humans unless they are rabid. They must live in great numbers around our area since seeing one that became "roadkill" isn't uncommon but it is rare that I see one walking around in the wild.

He sent the skunk's head to the state capital (Trenton) for examination.

A month later the results came back he was rabid.

He was chasing my dog and I ran inside to get the gun.

When I got outside he decided to chase me instead ....

I jumped into the back of my pick-up bed for safety and popped him from there.

It sounds a little funny, but at the time it was scary as hell.
