As big a fan as I am of Batman Begins, I'm just not sure about the direction they've taken with the Joker. Part of the comics character's essence is a certain foppish vanity, a concern with artful glamor if you will. This new incarnation as a sloppy mess -- who seems to have applied his own make-up haphazardly, rather than having it acid-washed into his skin -- strikes me as untrue to the persona we know and hate from DC Comics.

I kinda agree with Vortigern's concern---and am also, at the same time, just kinda
waiting to see what direction they go with this

A negative thing (and I'm just conjecturing) would be if they were going in a more
solely horrific and grotesque direction merely because that's hip, edgy and yet within
the realms of reason for this character's persona

Like Vortigern, I also was hoping for a more "refined" nutbag---still dangerous
and psycho as heck---but with the ABILITY to be debanoir and light in certain scenarios
----this is looking more and more like that's not possible ----

          well, we'll see....

The Crow now has green hair?
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I think Nicholosons' portrayl of the Joker in Burton's Batman necesitated a change in this one. Nicholson is a big star, a big persona, and played the Joker well, and pretty faithful to most comic interpretations post-70s anyway. So if they did the Joker the same way, they'd have a perceived remake on their hands.

Still thinking this is going to be far too scary for my 6-year old.

Chris, I hear what you're saying about Nicholson's performance necessitating a change for critical and artistic purposes. And really, I think Heath Ledger is such an awesome actor that I can't wait to see what he does with the Joker, regardless of his lack of foppishness or refinement. Also, the BAS Joker, as voiced by Mark Hamill, was so perfect a representation of the 70s-80s-90s Joker that I suppose it only makes sense to move on and do something fresh and original.

I'll reserve judgement till I'm in the seat watching the Joker cackle!

Nicholson and Burton took the Joker alot goofier than this is going to be for sure. Been there, done that, didn't like it much. This is a new (for movies anyway) and much more intense interpretation, and I can't wait to see if Nolan and Ledger can pull it off. For me, I'm just not sure if the way that TAS Joker is portrayed by Hamill (my ideal Joker) is possible in a "realistic" movie environment. That's what they tried (and failed in my opinion) to do in Batman '89.

i have to say, this looks more like the Joker to me than the flabby, immobile-faced Jack Nicholson version.

i loved BB so much, i'm giving them the total benefit of the doubt.

I'm pretty psyched about this as well. The first pics we saw a couple of months ago had me woried for a while, but this looks pretty good. So what if the white make up looks a little messy, I'm sure they'll come up with a good explanation. And like someone else already said Nolan had to do something different with the Joker after Nicholson's portrayal.
Batman Begins turned out to be an awesome movie, I'm sure Nolan won't fail us again either this time.

All I can say is..."in Chris Nolan I trust!" He's made the ONLY Batman Movie...so I'm more than willing to see what direction He takes now with the Joker. He's certainly looks insane...no question about that!
