Beta could actually get 2 hours on a tape at the slowest recording speed. Beta was 1, 1.5 and 2 hours where VHS was 2, 4 and 6 hours (except for some special tapes that had 8 hour capabilities). VHS quality went downhill REAL fast with the longer times. 6 and 8 hour is unwatchable as far as I am concerned. Beta didn't take a huge hit in quality at the slower speeds. I actually own a high end Beta deck that still operates flawlessly. I have quite a few movies on Beta that are not available on DVD as of yet. And I have many tapes that I recorded myself - old football games, etc.

It's been a while since I taped on a Beta. I do now remember the 3 hours, but I never knew you could get 5.5 on different tapes. Good info, thanksComment

To the average consumer, not the enthusiast market, a basic standard VHS tape could have two hours on the best default setting in contrast to the one hour of Beta. This gave VHS an early boost over Beta and certainly helped VHS get a foothold in the rise of video rental chains.
I'm not knocking Beta. I think Laser Discs were great in their day as well and are also an underappreciated format. You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

Yeah, I remember buying the L-750 tapes and they could hold up to 4 1/2 hours.
Technologically, Beta was superior and more innovative in some ways (for example, Beta introduced stereo audio to home video). When the enhanced versions came out, ED Beta was superior to Super VHS, and it's resolution even matched or beat that of DVDs (10 years before the latter was even introduced). Of course, that format was primarily for professional use, as Beta was practically dead as a consumer product by that point.Comment

I think it's great that there are people that are still passionate about the Beta format and, yes, later tapes could hold more. But, I think, we were talking about what killed the format with the general buying public, which was storage size.

actually what really killed the beta was Sony's refusal to allow any sort of third party to release films for them without going through the legal high cost route for Sony's "OK" (which was really paying Sony to release films on their betamax format). VHS allowed this so any company could make films on the vhs format, THAT is what clobbered Sony's Betamax. When the rental store came around, VHS had a ton of films already sent in the market while beta had a handful
I really believe bluray is the laserdisc of today ( I still have an LD player and discs, betamax too for that matter). Despite company "exclusive extras to bluray" crap that they pull, bluray will remain as the "high end anal movie goers" format like laser disc was. Dvd will stand the test of time and by the end of it's demise, whatever will be replacing bluray will already have hit the marketLast edited by mazinz; Dec 5, '10, 12:40 AM."What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

When an off the beaten path property like Space:1999 (at least it is in the US) can come out on Blu-ray it tells me blu-ray's appeal is more broad than movie fans.Comment

After reviewing the comments in this Thread...
I think I have Tunnel Vision So Damn far, with stuff that I like and Buy.
I never knew that Blue Ray players, or Movies have become so cheap.
.... Still, I am not going to race out and get anything right yet, until I am a bit more financually Secure, But it is some interesting Knowledge, to say the least.
I don't think I'd ever buy but a handful of DVD's that I have on the Blue Ray. I don't need a whole new conversion. ..., I don't feel like spending the Bread it would cost to buy 200+ DVD to Blue Ray again.
I saw that Comercial for that New 3-D TV ....
It sorta got me thinking, because My Flipp-in Living Room TV Just crapped out.
However, I still think 3-D is a Phase .... , and watching 3-D stuff with them Glasses on, Gives me a Big time Headache.Last edited by BlackKnight; Dec 5, '10, 3:15 AM.... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.

Until about a month ago, I thought that 'Blue Ray' was a fifth-tier DC villian...
So, hell, I cant honestly say... Though it would be kind of ridiculous to think of a world without DVDs - they have completely saturated world culture by this point..
Maybe the Laser Disc will make a big resurgence??I saw Godzilla vs. Megalon on a friend's LD player years back, holy horsesh1t, it was BEAUTIFUL - I STILL have yet to experience picture and sound quality like that again!
