Blue Ray or DVD??? What's gonna happen?

I was going to buy some DVD's for Christmas presents but if everyone is going to be switching I'd rather not waste the money. Are Blue Ray players taking over? I keep hearing that DVDs are going rapidly extinct.
I can see where Roku and netflicks and all that is headed eventually, but in the mean time what are the most practical options?

I'm not switching anytime soon. I'm not shelling out a couple hundred dollars for a TV to watch it on,close to a hundred bucks for a player, then whatever amount I've got to shell out for the movies. Not when I've already got a regular TV and a DVD player.

I was talking with some guy who is into some of the marketing stuff for blueray and DVD misc. and he was telling me how Blueray isn't taking over like everyone thought it would, so some companies that have a lot invested into blueray tech is trying to force it on the people by cutting back on DVD items ...

no clue if it's true of if the guy is talking out his rear, but I have a feeling if they try too hard they'll just end up making the mass market pretty mad. but then eveyone will come around and buy blueray after they have no choise.... Myself I won't go blueray unless I have to. DVDs are good enough for me.

Until they come up with Blu Ra players for $25.00 and under most of the general public will still keep DVD as the norm.

There's still a chance Blu Ra might go the way of Betamax if the players don't lower in price drastically.

I'm sticking with DVD for a while yet. Most of the films I wanna watch are pretty old anyway, B movies from the 60's-80's most likely won't get a BluRay release.
While there is some really cool stuff eg: Goodfellas or Apocalypse Now, so many of the films on BlueRay are junk like Fast&Furious 2 or whatever.

The worrying thing is that a lot of DVD releases are coming out with comparatively fewer and fewer special features these days, enticing people to buy the usually feature-packed Blu Ray versions.

will a regular DVD or burned DVD play on a new blue ray player? If so, does it enhance the regular dvd at all?

For me its stick with regular dvd too.

Yes, a Blu-Ray player will generally upscale the standard DVD playback to high definition (720p/1080i/1080p). Or you can just watch it at standard definition, if you wish.

Not exactly sure about DVD-R capability though; that might vary by model.

I'm sure everyone knows that even if Blue Ray does take over it will not be long before they then phase it out and replace it with something else so my advice would be not to chase technology if you are happy with what you have at the moment.

allthough i have dvd's i'm still buying VHS tapes for next to nothing and enjoy the programme or film just as much without spending a fortune or driving myself mad thinking i'm missing something.

I have a KILLER surround sound system(Harmon Kardon)...and let me tell you, the sound is the the BIGGEST difference I noticed. It's miles above DVD! Of course the Picture is a AMAZING as well. That said, Im glad they're backwards compatible. I'm slowing replacing my DVD's...there's no hurry, and I LOVE watching the Bluray prices fall pretty quickly(as the Hardware is paid for now, Companies can sell the Discs cheaper).

I've done sound comparisons of my DVD's vs. my Blurays...and WOW! I put in my in Star Trek 6 DVD...where the Klingon Moon explodes, and the shock wave hit the Excelsior...and then put in the BLURAY...night AND DAY FOLKS!

I'm in no great hurry to get rid of my DVD's...but when it comes to buying new releases...Bluray ONLY Baby!

                          Hmmmm....

I suspect Blu-ray is SUPPOSED to replace DVD; but since nobody has any money there hasn't been the big switch-over yet. That's why you get both in a lot of packs now. I'm thinkin' that when the big change-over comes, something will have ALREADY replaced Blu-ray. Probably downloads or a subscription servoce. Disks cost almost nothing to produce, downloads ACTUALLY cost nothing.

But there will always be People who want a hard Copy(like Me), with Case & artwork. Kinda like People who collect LP's. Personally...I'd be pi$$ed off if all Movies were streaming Video.

Yeah, I haven't touched Blu-ray because of this, I think eventually it will be buying discs to order (like WB does) or downloads direct to TV. (which is awful because I refuse to buy cable)
