Blue Ray or DVD??? What's gonna happen?

People that love cutting edge high tech stuff think the whole world is in the same boat.

That's not true.

Most poor family's can't afford a Blu Ray or the discs ... and poor (average) family's are the people that determine if a formats is made the norm because they're where the mass produced money lies.

I thought that with VHS and now I cannot even find a blank tape to record on anymore.

I'll just buy an extra DVD player and store it (they're almost giving them away these days), and keep playing my DVDs. To be honest, I don't care about supersound and a zillion pixels, I'm happy with what I have.
Maybe, just maybe, if they stop releasing films on DVd altogether, I'll buy a Blu-Ray and new films for that one. I will not replace anything I have now.
Btw, I still play my records, too. I have CDs, but I haven't replaced any vinyl albums.

It's taken me years to get most of my vhs collection on dvd and I am not going to switch again unless there is no choice....most of the stuff I watch wouldn't benifit from the extra 'dazzle' blue ray offers which is also why I havn't gone hd yet also. Some of my friends have commented that some 70's stuff looks darker on blue ray compared to the dvd release particularlt Carpenter's Halloween. I ain't gonna be changing for a while methinks but I too have noticed if you want the super duper special collectors ultimate edition including extras then blue ray has it and dvd rarely does these days...a marketing ploy for sure.

I think that DVD will eventually go the way of VHS, not sure when. However, it will not be Blu-ray that sends it there, it will be digital cloud storage and/or streaming ala Netflix and other services. I do believe Blu-ray will survive longer and cater to the niche crowd who want the absolute best quality picture that can be found (and that crowd is larger than most people think). Digital streaming is on par with DVD quality now, but I believe it will be quite some time before it is up to Blu-ray quality. The technology and bandwidth requirements to match Blu-ray will be some time coming in my opinion.

It is definitely up to how much care they put into cleaning up the source material for how good they look on Blu-ray, so I can't comment on every movie. However, Halloween looked spectacular on Blu-ray. FARRRRR better than any other format to date, and I have seen them all. So I am not sure why your friends felt that it looked worse/darker on Blu-ray. Perhaps the TV they were watching it on caused the issue?

I agree Scott Halloween looks like it came out yesterday! extremely nice transfer and look at the new TIME LIFE 6MDM set its standard dvd high def and they look brilliant in a Blu Ray machine

But there will always be People who want a hard Copy(like Me), with Case & artwork. Kinda like People who collect LP's. Personally...I'd be pi$$ed off if all Movies were streaming Video.

I think the reason more lower- to average-income people were willing to make the leap from VHS to DVD is that the benefits of doing so were huge. It wasn't that hard of a sell. The benefits of going from DVD to Blu-ray are negligible by comparison. "It's like a DVD, only better!" Eh, neat.

I was going to buy some DVD's for Christmas presents but if everyone is going to be switching I'd rather not waste the money. Are Blue Ray players taking over? I keep hearing that DVDs are going rapidly extinct.
I can see where Roku and netflicks and all that is headed eventually, but in the mean time what are the most practical options?

It all depends on the enduser.

We do Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment(WDSHE) content, both domestic and international. We've received content for next year all the way to Xmas.
Here is what they are promoting for their entire content:

Domestic:
DVD, Blu-Ray, Download or Digital On Demand(DOD) and BR 3D

International(Australia, UK, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Japan):
DVD and BR.
Japan is the only one pushing BR and DOD while every other country is set for DVD and BR.

Does this mean WDSHE dictates the market and represents what endusers are utilizing? Personally, I don't know. They do high unit shiftings in this market and certainly are one of the top studios that do dictate consumer intake.

Seems DVD and BR will be around for a while but DOD is very strong in the US market.
The trickle down effect will take time to reach the low income just like DVD has now become affordable. Players can be purchased for $15-$25 while discs can be found for dollars.

Seems DVDs will still be around. BR will be wide spread and DOD is just an alternative.

Curious to see what the next 20 years will be like with tech.

With me, it's (basically) blu ray for buying and DVD for recording. I'll only buy TV show sets on DVD these days. For movies (unless it's really wanted and available no other way) it's blu ray all the way.

And the improvement is huge, even on a small 32" TV like mine.

If you want quality its blu-ray. With players under $100 and most people now have a HD tv they are moving forward. But how about 3D? You can only get the real 3d with the new blu-ray 3d.
This is the cheepest 3d I've seen.

I disagree. As more and more People get HD flat Screens, and Bluray Players(and the Discs) keep getting more affordable...people will see the benefits of the switch.

I have to disagree as well. The quality improvement from DVD to Blu-ray is at least equal to the improvement from VHS to DVD, in some cases more.
