I can't stand listening to anyone following the footsteps of the Mariah Carey school of R&B that has basically taken over. Vocal gymnastics - showing off range - not for me. I like melody, and I like real voices. I've heard that Berry Gordy (of Motown fame) use to insist that songs be recorded a key above the singer's comfort range so the singer would need to put more effort into the recording - he wanted to hear them stretching themselves. I love that. I hate digital clean and lifeless.
I'm also in the Neil Young camp - except for a few songs or performances I can't stand his voice. I often like his songs when they're covered - and I recognize his influence and all that, but I just can't listen to the man most of the time.
One of my favorite bands is The Fall, and the lead singer (Mark E. Smith) is often said to be literally tone deaf.
I love Dylan's voice. It's strange and sometimes goofy and he's not exceptionally skilled, but he's not actually singing out of tune or anything like that.
Fred Schneider sounds a bit like Jello Biafra to me.
