I can't stand listening to anyone following the footsteps of the Mariah Carey school of R&B that has basically taken over. Vocal gymnastics - showing off range - not for me. I like melody, and I like real voices. I've heard that Berry Gordy (of Motown fame) use to insist that songs be recorded a key above the singer's comfort range so the singer would need to put more effort into the recording - he wanted to hear them stretching themselves. I love that. I hate digital clean and lifeless.

I'm also in the Neil Young camp - except for a few songs or performances I can't stand his voice. I often like his songs when they're covered - and I recognize his influence and all that, but I just can't listen to the man most of the time.

One of my favorite bands is The Fall, and the lead singer (Mark E. Smith) is often said to be literally tone deaf.

I love Dylan's voice. It's strange and sometimes goofy and he's not exceptionally skilled, but he's not actually singing out of tune or anything like that.

Fred Schneider sounds a bit like Jello Biafra to me.

Before I give my two cent's let me make a teensy little point: I am not terribly into what passes for popular music these days. I don't listen to Lady Gaga, or Bjork or whoever else is on the radio. I listen to golden oldies from the late sixties and early seventies.

With that being said, here I go:

      John Lennon
      Bob Dylan
      Janis Joplin
      George Harrison
      Julian Lennon
Madeline Kahn (listen to her sing in 'Blazing Saddles' it's horrible!)
My dad (he used to torture me by singing 'The Shadow of Your Smile, and to this day, I can't ABIDE that song!)
Carole Channing in 'Hello Dolly', she croaked throughout the whole play.

            I heard Madonna sing live.
Man, sound mixing does work miracles.....

A lot of current performers can't carry a tune in a bucket either....

Bob Dylan has a horrible voice in my opinion as well.

With that said... I'll make an observation about this thread,
which is many posters are basing their judgements off of one song
by any particuolar artist... or a "group of songs" akin to the type songs you'd
find on that particular artsist's "BEST OF" album collection,
because that's the selection of songs that the casual listener will have the
                  chance to hear.

The fact is that most of these artists have 10, maybe 20, maybe even
30 albums worth of material and so the judgements being made are off
of a very small amt. of material percentagewise....

I find that kind of judgement to be short sighted.
Find me some Neil Young where he's not singing and I might agree with you. It's the voice, not what he sings about.

And with that, I throw in:

                  Randy Newman

I think Bowie on his early albums could really belt it out - now his voice is shot - but everyone gets old.

Morrison I'm not big on either.

From what I've read Hendrix hated his voice. I actually think it's unique and powerful in the way he uses it. And that's one of those things where it's like, yeah, he doesn't have much range or skill as a singer - but he's not trying to do things his voice can't do and failing at it - which is what I personally take to be singing badly.

I believe the whole gag there is that she's imitating Marlene Dietrich - who is a really terrible singer, despite the fact that she sang in a few movies and had a fairly successful singing career.

Check it out - here she is singing Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind":
                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhxxt...eature=related

                              And in german too:
                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR-UjIKo798

EDIT: haha - I just found a clip of Dietrich in a film almost exactly doing the "I'm Tired" routine - with a different song, of course:
                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaZDiKRT1is&feature=fvw

Just for comparison - here's the "Blazing Saddles" clip:

For the Rush guy (I forgot his name)

I think he's an excellent singer, I just personally don't like the highness of his voice.

For me this is the same for the Styx guy (the one who sings Grand Illusion etc) and the Reo Speedwagon guy.
