I gotta be totally unoriginal and concur with Superman.

No other character has transcended all forms of media and liscencing. He truly believes his powers are a gift to humanity, not himself. No other character has both his core beliefs nor his powerful sense of inspiration.

Now, coming in close second is Shazam for me, but I fully expect to be the only one with that sentiment. He is every kid's fantasy that they can become powerful. There's no doubt many children of the 70's having a hard time, dealing with abuse or other setbacks in life fantasized about being able to say a magic word and solve their problems. That's a powerful thing to inspire kids to become stronger than they are and to build the seeds of hope.

I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

It changes. When I was a kid it was definitely Superman as played by Christopher Reeve. Lately, I'd say it's Indiana Jones. I was reading a screenplay blog once and it talked about how Indiana Jones is a great character because even though he constantly fails, he fails spectacularly. There's good advice, somewhere in there.

So even though they originated in the sixties I "grew up" with them.

Ditto, probably more a tie between Spidey and Steve Englehart's portrayal of Captain America (primarily from issues 163 - 181).

Nick Tate's portrayal of Alan Carter in Space:1999 was another huge fictional influence as well.

            I'll let you guess...

After the obvious, it's Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and Dracula.

I don't have ONE fictional character that shaped my life, lotsa them have had a big influence on me, and none are faves. Besides, non-fiction people like Michael Jackson (RIP), David and Shaun Cassidy, Evel Knievel and Rick Springfield have had bigger impacts on my life.

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

At different points in my life:

                        Batman

                        The Lone Ranger

                        Superman

                        Doc Savage

                        John Carter of Mars

UPDATE: Had to add Captain Kirk:

Currently, I think I'm back to Superman again.

Superman came to my mind right away. Then, in no particular order, Batman, Spiderman, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Indiana Jones, and Jasmes Bond.

I would have to say Arturo Bandini gave me a whole lotta inspiration as to the going abouts of a young man.
