i was brought up on elvis... put it this way lets just say i thought elvis was my dad!
pictures all over the walls, and wall hangings, my mum is a huge huge fan, she had a shrine at one point
growing up in my house it was all about singing and elvis music, good memories, my dad left when i was 2 years old so growing up i thought that this guy all around the house in pictures was my dad lol
being here in the uk mum never got to see him live, she is disabled and could never afford to get to usa at the time, and thinking like a lot of folks that he would come here to tour some day, mum has polio and was in leg iron at the time so it was a thing that was never going to happen, 8 opperations later and she has now visited graceland 4 times mums one of the few to have made it passed the red rope barriers and sit on one of the chairs allowed by security as one time her hip gave out and they sat her on one of the sofas lol... typical mum
now its said that mum has a substantial collection around here, nothing major on a worldwide scale but she has some cool stuff from life size standees to one of his neck scarfs
i used to enjoy the xmas album growing up as when i hear that it always takes me back to childhood at xmas time, i like in the ghetto, and dont cry daddy, we also have a soft spot for you'll never walk alone which was played at my bros funeral
but yeah good times growing up on elvis, no real harm done, i would have deffo liked to have seen a show live, when i hear the cc rider music it still makes my hair stand up on the neck lol, mum wont entertain any knockoff copy singers of any kind! no matter how good

However the guy was fat and loved to pop pills, smoke dope and throw back the booze. The things we do for money right? Interestingly enough the crowd where we were loved him. I mean really loved him. It's crazy.

In the end there was only one Elvis and he's dead. All these other guys need to find something better to do with their lives. I appreciate the fact that they do bring some joy to the lives of die hard fans but honestly I have to scratch my head. They have talent and the ability to entertain, I just wish they would tap their own potential instead of just following the steps of a guy that's been dead for 33 years. Who knows what they could do to further the style and genre of entertainment that Elvis helped create.

        Okay.... now I'll shut up.
I felt the same exact way. I had no desire whatsoever to see the "Elvis Tribute Artists", but I stumbled on Shawn Klush by accident. I am a big fair fan and we went to the Schuylkill County Fair one year and he was performing that night and I walked by the amphitheater and caught a song or two and I was captivated. This guy has it down pat. If you have seen Elvis live during the early 70's, especially the 72 Hawaii concert, you would be shocked how much Shawn brings Elvis alive. He has the mannerisms, the playfulness with the audience, the whole package. He's not just some fat guy up there making a fool of himself. And he has been doing it for 15 years, keeping the music of Elvis alive and allowing those who never saw him to get a small taste of what it must have been like. I am telling you that you would change your mind if you saw Shawn in concert. The management team at Graceland has picked him to be the official Elvis tribute artist and for good reason.

Have yet to see any good Elvis impersonator live but did see El Vez back when he started out in L.A. in the 80's.

Andy Kaufman was the first famous Elvis Impersonator. He was the one that got me into Elvis when I first saw him do Elvis on SNL when it aired in October 1975. After that, my brother and I were hooked.

Love all his movies no matter how cheesy.

That "battle" is the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.
I too am a big BEATLES fan....PULP FICTION fan too...and in one of
the cut scenes in PF Vincent and Mia have a bit back and forth
regarding "Beatles Man vs. Elvis Man".

                    In that context Mike.

I just happened to like TARANTINO's take on it...
pop culturally insightful to the extreme....
Now I'm gonna ask you a bunch of
quick questions I've come up with
that more of less tell me what kind
of person I'm having dinner with.
My theory is that when it comes to
                    important subjects, there's only
two ways a person can answer. For
                    instance, there's two kinds of
people in this world, Elvis people
                    and Beatles people. Now Beatles
people can like Elvis. And Elvis
people can like the Beatles. But
                    nobody likes them both equally.
Somewhere you have to make a
choice. And that choice tells me
                    who you are.

Love Elvis, and in fact everytime this one particular Elvis impersonator is in town we catch his show. Elvis Wade... looks and sounds like what the king would have looked and sounded like if he had made it into his 50's or so.

Funny thing, he's married to Sandy Posey, who actually sang back-up for Elvis a few times.

Elvis' rendition of Yesterday on tour is one of my top 10 favorite tunes. Shawn does it REALLY well too.

Yeah, Aloha from Hawaii is the best Elvis album PERIOD. I have the live concert on VHS, laserdisc and DVD. I wore the VHS tape out and my laserdisc player is buggy so I hope the DVD lasts!

Funny story about that album. I had a lot of ELVIS records when I was a kid and one day my mom brought home Aloha from Hawaii. At the time I never really liked live albums, I thought the applause was too annoying. When I put the first record on (Aloha is a double record set) I was heart broken when I realized it was live. Then I gave it a chance and listened and I was SPELLBOUND. It quickly became my favorite and none has surpassed it since. Totally changed my thinking on live music as well. Now I much prefer live music from any of my favorite bands/artists. In fact, I think that live music is a true test of a band or artist. If they sound better live, they are a true talent. If they sound much worse live, then they are not (probably because the producer mixed the crap out of their voice because it sucks).
