I agree that there wasn't much character developlment... or not enough reason to care for these characters yet.
There is probably a lot of pressure to impress folks right off the bat and to get big viewing numbers... at the expense of building up to someting with a gratifying pay off.
Maybe they have a long term story arc in mind.
As a "Lost" fan, it's fun to think back to the first season when all we knew was that they were on an island. Now we know that there was so much more going on around them.
Then again, "Firefly" had great character development and it was axed.
