If it was me I would just let the guy leave then call the police.
CVS has CCT camera's for identification.

In a lurch if I did have to subdue somebody I would probably use a full nelson ... even though they'd probably slip out of it and kill me

I look at it this way.... I don't get paid enough to chase a crook.

I'm not trained and I could do something wrong which would let the guy get off, or make him sue me.

Nope, that's what 911 is for.

That's just terrible. And I wonder if he would have been treated that way if he had been white.

Don't steal stuff. He wasn't taking food to feed his family, it was useless stuff and meaningless in the grand scheme. He paid the ultimate price but in Chicago they promote fear as intimidation on the streets. If I thought there was any chance this guy was gonna cause repurcussions with my family and was in the same situation who knows. This guy says something like "I'm gonna get you for this" or hurt my family. Plain and simple. He's a dead man. Not saying that happened but in today's world a guy stealing crayons and toothpaste could be carrying a gun and do you wait to see if he shoots you first....in Chicago I'm sure it's even more likely. Not me. You see innocent people killed everyday for the $5 they have in their pockets and they aren't the ones that initiated any of it. This guy could be alive today if art and dental hygiene weren't such a big priority and he'd just walked by the local CVS. Unfortunately it's a reality that's been caused by a weak justice system and poor support of the men and women enforcing it. A system where the innocent are the ones that worry about being prosecuted for actions taken while defending themselves against criminals. It's a tragic result of the world that's been created. This guy probably feared for himself and over restrained a shoplifter with a deadly result. Not premeditated or intentional, just over reaction in a tense situation he probably never intended to be in.

Sorry that's wrong and that person should be charged with murder. The Person shoplifted crayons and toothpaste not put a gun to an employees head.

I hate when companies want the employers to play police in the store....you want to catch shoplifters have security at the door. I'm the same way they don't pay enough to stop a thief.......

Absolutely. He was evidently put in a choke hold to subdue his stealing ***. The thief was a victim of his own actions. People in the world need to except responsibility for there actions. His lead to death.

Not saying death by any means is what he deserved, but it was an accidental result of his actions.

I do believe there is a lot of racism out there and it does effect how many people are apprehended, detained and even tried but I don't think that's the case in this particular case.

It seems to me whoever is strong enough and wreckless enough to choke someone to death either by accident or on purpose was probably not concerned with the color of the person he was choking.

From just what I read, I would say the clerk should be charged with involuntary manslaughter rather than murder.

He definitely at least needs to be charged with something.
Whether he beats it or not is up to the jury to decide.

People who kill other people should also accept responsibility for their actions, and I don't think the death penalty should be applied to shoplifters - especially without a judge, jury, or lawyers. Nor do I want to be killed for speeding, jaywalking, or not keeping off the grass, especially not by a civillian who's ****ed at me for not obeying the law.

I wouldn't run to the racism charge so fast.

I would think that the person giving the stranglehold didn't think it would cause lethal damage. I remember Richard Belzer (I think) was injured in a demonstration of a stranglehold a long time ago.

But it's terrible that this happened, even if he was stealing, he didn't deserve to die.

                            Initial dialogue with career inmate...

Inmate: "What'cha doin' time for bub?"

Convicted Clerk: "I killed a man."

Inmate: "Really? Did he do your girl?"

                            Convicted Clerk: "No..."

                            Inmate: "Take your money?"

                            Convicted Clerk: "No..."

                            Inmate: "Steal your car?"

                            Convicted Clerk: "No..."

                            Inmate: "What then?"

Conicted Clerk: "He stole my crayons."

Inmate: "Hey man. If you need ANYTHING, even an extra roll of toilet paper, just let me know. We're cool. "

Citizen's arrest is not "judge, jury and executioner"! The killer should be jailed. Petty shoplifting does not constitute death. Shoplifting is not a capital crime, but murder should be. Life should have more value...And the cop that watched should be jailed for letting it happen. If there was an officer present the employee had no reason to still be killing the "suspect".
