    I would say no.
    Especially with King

Christine, Cujo, Pet Semetary..... All of those were pretty fun movies and not necessarily exact literary translations.

Finest example would have to be the Shining, tho. Fantastic book and a fantastic adaptation (regardless of what Mr. King thinks himself). Really two totally different entities more akin to a retelling of a gothic folk tale, but harrowing in both medium.

Even though I was 20 years old when it came out, this scene from Cat's Eye bugged me for a while.

I know it was done tongue-in-cheek, but the torture aspect of it bugged me at the time.

I often remember that scene when I see those "quit smoking clinic"s adds in the paper.

Thinner may be one of the more awful film adaptations.

            My vote is for Dreamcatcher.
It is near impossible to condense a story of this size to a 2 hr movie.
Imo some of these adaptations should never have happened.

                    I'm a huge King fan!!!
Rereading the stand (extended version) and the darktower series(book III) right now.
I've also been collection the comic adaption of the gunslinger/darktower series.I read issue #5 of the fall of Gilead last night.
Alot of the movie adaptions are crap but there are some greats.I have been hoping they would do a tv series based on the darktower books it could go on for a couple of seasons.
“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”

I am a really big fan of Stephen King. I have read a lot of his work but I would have to say that for me, Misery was the best read.

He litteraly lives 45 minutes from me.

IMO, he's never topped what I think is his finest novel, "The Stand". I'm a big fan of his Dark Tower series too (but was disappointed in the "big" ending).
Me too, I've read so many of his stories it's hard to pick a favorite. But I really do enjoy The Dark Tower series. I haven't read all of them yet, so don't spoil the ending for me

Salem's Lot, hands down. You get into that book and you just get this feeling that it COULD be happening or have happened somewhere. The Stand is a close second. I haven't read through all the posts here yet JP, so I don't know if this was mentioned already, but if you like King, another author you might like is Dean Koontz. He is actually my favorite author. If you read anything, start with Midnight, Lighting, Watchers, Phantoms. Those are from his peak era.

In the Southeast Pacific, lies the sunken city of R'Leyh. There lies C'thulhu waits to return to our world with the other Great Old Ones. A hideous creature of enormous size and alien power, it waits for it's time to return patiently. For it has all the time in the world while it waits for the stars.

I'll go one step further and pick his worst IMO. Tommyknockers - I almost stopped reading this book about a dozen times. I would get bored with the 50-100 pages of nothing, and just as I was about to put the book down and say "forget it", WHAM. He would hit me with 10 pages of WOW. Then another boring section. It was too up and down for me. The mini-series was terrible too.

However, I DID like The Stand miniseries almost as much as the book. The book was great, very close second to Salem's Lot. And I like both of the Salem's Lot miniseries as well.
