Loved, loved, loved The Talisman. Won $100 in a high school writing competition with a pretty obvious rip of the story. Gonna be a mini-series of it, from what I've read.

That said, I think my favorite novel would be the collaboration with Peter Straub - the Talisman. I really enjoyed the foray into fantasy with a dark and creepy edge.
I have to agree that his short stories and novellas are often outstanding, especially the earlier ones, and that by comparison, some of his novels are a bit bloated and have weak third acts. And yes, "The Talisman" is fantastic. It's sequel "The Black House", after a shaky beginning, is also quite good (but not as much as the first book).

My favourite King novella is "The Long Walk", but "The Running Man" is also very good (and very different from the rather poor, unfaithful movie adaptation).

King is hit or miss with me.

I did enjoy The Dark Half, even before I became aware of the whole Richard Bachman thing. Of course, once I became aware I felt stupid for not getting the joke to begin with.

Rage disturbed me when I first read it in school.

I can see why with recent events (recent in terms of the last 10-20 yrs) this book is no longer in print.

                The stand was ...outstanding!The mini-series was so-so.
The dark Tower was at its best in the last 4 volumes imo.
The first volume,at first reading, seemed weird, but fit in nicely with the last ones ending.

Skeleton crew was his finest collection of short stories imo.

Does a movie have to be "faithful" to be considered great.

I love RUNNING MAN...and that's a movie most would agree was
good if not "great". Your post is the first time I've heard someone refer
to THE RUNNING MAN movie as anything less than "good".

The thing is,the movie and the book had almost nothing in common.
If you liked the movie, you would love the novella.

I thought the Running Man was "ok" but it could have been better.

As it is, it's a little bit boring in a lot of spots
