Hey Don
the thing is though whether people accept it or not is that music can and usually is a lifestyle. For example if you tell punk and hardcore kids it is just music and they will shoot you down some nasty stares. To them the music plays a role and creates a certain type of lifestyle for them. Not saying it is a bad thing at all, but a true one. In the early 90s when hip hop started it's huge and maintaining current rise, a LOT of people in my highschool were hugely affected. Literally over night we now had so called gangs, posses and a general rise in violence. It is not a coincidence with the rise of one type of musical art form with not exactly the best role values taking it's toll on the mainstream. Actually I saw this thing going on everywhere and how it is has changed over the years to less violence but more stupidity today. The mentality of the public changed. You do have rappers who have seen this and have changed their tune lyrically and publically over the years. The music industry is aware of this as well, but can you imagine how it would collapse over night if they did admit to being a huge influence in lifestyle? At least those in the tv commerical industry admit to it. The lawsuits would come flying in with all sorts of accusations.
Granted you did have this with the pmrc vs the world era, but they were also involving religion into it which is not what is happening nowadays (not like then)
Lyrically yes some 80's and previous years have had questionable songs, but the were also done in way to hide it to a degree. Now it is blatantly right in your face and that is the difference. It leaves no distinction to what you may or may not be singing about. No mystery at all.
Do keep in mind that I am not against hip hop, but that I have observed it's effects on general mainstream. And I am a pretty not that strict flexible person, but some of this is way over the top for it to be mainstream. Back in the 80's and beforehand most of it would never had made mainstream and stayed underground
I once put it like this: "the greatest influence on the music world today with the absolute worst set of morals I have ever come across.
film is absolutely no where near the influence that music has over people
ok I will not say anything else I promise
I used to record mst3k so if they did have teenage crime wave there could be a chance I might have it on tape, however thank you for the youtube clip.
though not a tv show remake they are also re-doing red dawn now as well
