I agree on the Addams Family and I think had Raul Julia not died they would still be making sequels today. That was just the perfect remake in my opinion...and I really don't usually care much for remake movies like these.
I also liked Lost In Space but it was by no means a perfect remake. I just don't think it's as bad as people have labeled it. I'll admit that I just kept seeing Joey whenever Matt LeBlanc was onscreen.
I also liked Charlie's Angels but I wish they had done more with the former Angels. Would've been so cool to see all the former Angels on a case with the new ones. I also didn't like the way they handled the Bosley character's backstory.
I've never seen that Beverly Hillbillies movie. I never really cared for "Ernest" so it seemed to me that it would also be a bad movie.
Kind of makes you wonder who approves this stuff. I mean, you have these great concepts and then someone changes it beyond reasonable and it gets approved?? All they need to do is have some fan input on this stuff in the planning stages and I'm sure that all of these crappy movies would've been huge smash hits.

Beverly Hillbillies was actually one of the better ones IMHO. Jim Varney was nothing like his "Ernest" character. He did a great job of capturing Jed Clampets quiet calm demeanor. Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman were excellent as Miss Hathaway and Mr. Drysdale and of course I don't think they could have picked a better actress to play Grannie like Cloris Leachman did. It was campy like the TV series but it was also fun.
Here's another one that started off as a movie and became a TV series and is now being remade as a movie again: Fame (September release date). I'm already cringing at the thought.Comment

Search for Spock? Best list?
Ok, of the odd-numbered Treks it was the best. I'll give you that.
And Tron was unwatchable.
Blade Runner=snorefest.
Wasn't Flash Gordon released in the 70's? and again, best list?
Maybe best soundtrack list?

Just playing Devil's Advocate
I'm sure the person who said all 80's sci-fi movies sucked has a different opinion as well.
How about Road Warrior? That's one of my favorites. Gremlins?

>For me, the 80's was a wasteland of movies I couldn't stand
....which would make sense, 'cos you're older than me so you would have seen more by that point.

'Course for every "Blade Runner" there are four "Star Crashes." There was SO MUCH made during the 80's, especially the first half, it's easy to cherry pick. AND easy to forget the flops.
>But when most of it is lacking both imagination AND intelligence, this is why the theory basis of dumbing down of America was created
Well.... I'm not exactly disagreeing with you; but I don't think it's a new phenomoenon, or an accellerating one. I think most stuff has ALWAYS been pretty stupid. Sometimes the formula skews towards smart, sometimes it skews towards dumb; but those are minor detours. It holds right around "moronic." Look at the 80's, how many goofy teen sex comedies came out. (After "Animal House" hit.) They were all the same, and they were all pretty stupid. If you go back to the 50's you see PRETTY MUCH THE SAME MOVIE being made, minus the actual nudity. You couldn't show actual nudity, which is why so many beach movies were made. (And those weird, 5 minute kisses replaced actual sex.) So the trappings change, but underneath the window dressing it's the same stuff.
>and why we see that phrase being thrown around quite a lot these days
Yeah, but even that's cyclic. Every generation complains that the current one is slower, weaker and dumber than they were. (I think every 50's delinquent film has a scene that states just that, and then goes on to elaborate on how they're gonna destroy society. If you get the chance I recommend "Teenage Crime Wave," mostly for the opening blurb which cites "facts" from the Feds about how juvenile crime is WAY out of hand.)
>Charlie's Angels worked to some extent because they didn't try to remake the TV series using the same characters, so it felt more like a continuation
....which I'd say also worked for the Addams Family movies. Charlie's Angels also had the advantage of boobs.
>Fame (September release date). I'm already cringing at the thought.
But "Fame" is one of those movies that gets remade every few years under a different name. Hell, even "Fame" was an old formula when it came out.
>And my personal favorite "Night of the Comet"
Hee heee.... I just found that one on disk! It's actually a good film, 'cos when you get to the end it all makes sense. And it's funny. (It was the first un-horror movie I ever saw.)

I will have to hunt down teenage crime wave (unless it is up on archive.org) sounds fun. However you must agree that even though every generation complains about the one superceding it, it does ring a bell of truth. Here is a generic example for you. There is a huge difference in the 80's to hearing the Eurythmics on lets say a family radio, to nowadays with that same station playing eminem songs and the really young kids singing all of this crap and strongly being influenced by it. The film comedy Idiocracy hits the nail on the head of mostly what I am complaining about concerning the country dumbing down. It is more than just one generation ranking on another, something horrible is going on and we need to rise out of it soon
but getting back on fun track again, night of the comet is fave of mine alsoLast edited by mazinz; Aug 9, '09, 8:24 PM."What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

Twilight Zone movie wasn't that bad. I'd buy it for $3 if I saw it at Big Lots.
Night of the Comet was sorely missing on DVD for decades. I still need to pick that one up.

>There is a huge difference in the 80's to hearing the Eurythmics on lets say a family radio, to nowadays with that same station playing eminem songs
Well.... you gotta be careful with this kind of example, since it brings a measure of personal taste into the mix. I think you've also got to separate the trappings from the content: eminem may use more naughty words in his songs than groups back in the 80's, but is his stuff CONCEPTUALLY any more vulgar than a lot of 80's tunes? (Prince comes to mind, as does Tone-Loc and the Beastie Boys. And the Eurithmics did the innuendo laden "Missionary Man" which got a LOT of play on the radio and tv. Even the peace-and-love Beatles did a song about killing your girlfriend.)
I find even the vulgarity is cyclic. It's only been the last few years that we've had movies with anything NEAR the levels of sex and violence inherent to a lot of movies from the late 60's/early 70's. (Exact same PLOTS though. *sigh*) Music too. I find that there was a whole pile of songs of dubious taste and morality made back in the 30's and 40's. For example:
7 Songs From Your Grandpa's Day That Would Make Eminem Blush | Cracked.com
And I've actually heard WORSE than these. Seems like public outrage was a creation of the 50's. (Which may explain why it's such a staple of the 50's juvenile delinquent/rock and roll film.)
>and the really young kids singing all of this crap and strongly being influenced by it.
Yeah, but you gotta look at what "strongly influenced" means. I was on the recieving end of a LOT of this sort of debate: back in the "Dungeons and Dragons will make you a satanist" and "Heavy Metal music will make you a suicidal axe murderer" days. So I'm real leary of it. There's a big dif between wearing your pants around your knees and having a removable "Thugg Life" tatoo, and actually going out and mugging little old ladies. People readily pick up affectations, people don't often rewire their lives. I'v heard a lot of protest against rap (AND video games) based on it's effect on the young; but if you look at the actual crime statistics, violent crime (up until a year or so ago) took a huge DOWNTURN during the last couple of decades. Proponents of this sort of thing cite specific examples (often of a dubious nature as well,) but I think you've got to look at how representational they are.
Oh man, you've GOT to see Teenage Crimewave.... or at least the opening blurb! (It should be in here):
YouTube - MST3K - Teenage Crime Wave - (1/10)
>Hogan's Heros , my 3 sons ,6 milion dollar man are on the remake list.
I think it's safe to say that ANY show you remember has been pitched SOMEWHERE. "Duck Factory," "SledgeHammer" or "oops!" anyone?
....anyone....?
