I was 8 years old. I heard it on TV, and told my mom. I don't remember much else from that day. I remember my address and phone number from back then though.
Who cares whether he was "relevant" or not when he died? Many artists are not in their prime when they happen to die. It doesn't take away their previous accomplishments.
Not that I'm a big ELVIS fan or anything (just a big fan of rock icon
mentality---hey I'm a rocker!), but I thought the same thing after reading
Ant's post---not to mention the oddness of something losing value after
it's relavancy to culture dies off being a weird horse to ride when posting
regularly on a vintage toy site such as this----------R.I.P. KING
(I couldn'ta done it without ya!)
BTW, I was about 6 when he died----and I had no idea----then again,
I only really became aware of what rock artists "were" by about 1982,
years after his death
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

The man has become so symbolic of hillbilly excess that he'll probably be known for it long after his music is forgotten.
I remember seeing it on the 6 o'clock news (probably Bill Beutel and Roger Grismby), and remember images of Colonel Parker and his TCB plane. I didn't care any more about it than hearing about the reports of the people who died in car crashes or fires on the news, but was curious as to the outpouring of emotion of fans that was being reported. I didn't particularly find him fascinating beyond his tacky excesses (Graceland is a hoot), but I am fascinated with the fascination others have for him, if that makes any sense.
I guess I find it amusing that people are offended that a 16 year old ABMAC didn't fall apart over the death of someone who was a pill popping, self indulgent, eccentric pedophile who died on the crapper. He was without a doubt once of the most talented singers around, but death was the best thing for his legacy.

Who are you referring to? No one said anything that indicated that.
He was without a doubt once of the most talented singers around,
Not to mention---a groundbreaking icon---and that's why he's a special guy to say the least.
but death was the best thing for his legacy.
At the time of ELVIS' passing, a great writer on SNL said that was a great career move
(his death)----you guys may be right.

Ahhhh, Elvis is still The King...even though his personal life ended in/on the toliet...nobody will ever duplicate the success he had on multiple levels. That we're even discussing the guy's death 30 years later is proof of that. How many people will be doing the same with say, Kurt Cobain, x-number of years from now?
Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!
I actually like his 70's stuff a lot,one of my favorite songs is "Always on My Mind" and that one's from the 70's and my other fave from him is "Suspicious Minds" those are 2 of the greatest songs of all time
I like those and a few others from the 70's, just not the majority of the other stuff.

I disagree. Maybe in the court of public opinion, but since when does that matter?

Don't worry, I'm not "offended".....
but death was the best thing for his legacy.
Call me crazy, but I tend to think the "best thing for his legacy" were some recordings he made in Memphis in '54 and '55.....

The Kings music will never be forgotten,he's probably the most recognizable person ever

In memory of E
