I was also 11, visiting my brother here in CA (I'm originally from NYC). My mom and I were in the grocery store, and people were buzzing about how Elvis had died. At the time it was hard to believe.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
We had just moved into a new house about a week earlier and I was playing with my Captain Americar in the living room. My mother's friend called to tell us the news then just a few minutes later we saw it on TV.
I was 12 and Vacationing in Puerto Rico when I heard the News...My sister and I were in total shock. I was already a big Elvis fan.....Can't believe it's been 30 years.....
I was 7 and playing in the back-yard with my brother (destroying Matchbox Superfast and Hot Wheels redlines!) when my grandmother came out and told us.
It must have had some effect on me because I remember it vividly, they played Elvis songs all day and night on the radio, even here in Australia. Still can't get "In the Ghetto" out of my head!
He was a great talent, right up to the end amazingly. There a great clip somewhere of him performing Unchained Melody at a show just weeks before his death, and even through all the fat and fatigue he is mesmerizing. What a waste.
Like Goblin above I was much more upset when Lennon was shot three years later, remember the news bulletin and rushing to the door to tell my Mum and Dad as they arrived home. I remember telling them that Paul had been interviewed at an airport and that he didn't even seem upset!
elvis died on my birthday, so i was preparing to chow down on some cake:
(the top pic)
we were on vacation in our cabin in the Poconos. since we had no TV we had the radio on all the time. As my Mom was puttering around the cabin, the news broke in and announced that Elvis had died.
My Mom flew into a tizzy, yelling with the same panicky ferocity as a member of the French Aristocracy would have watching the peasants storm the Bastille. She ran into the bathroom, where my Dad was getting a shower.
I don't recall anything about it. I was only 2 though, so that's probably why.
My mom was a big fan of the early Elvis, but didn't care for the jumpsuited version. She always felt like he gave up his integrity and turned himself into a clown.
I think people go overboard with the Elvis worship, but the guy had it. He was a consumate entertainer, if nothing else.
I was 8 and vacationing in nashville when it came over the radio.
My mom and neighbor were very sad. I liked him at the time but didn't really understand it that much.
I am a huge Elvis fan, both of my boys have parts of his name in their names,
John Michael Elvis &
Andrew Robert Presley,
I put it after the first middle name so if they didn't like it no one would have to know. they both think it is cool though.
I was 11 years old and still remember my aunt crying ALL DAY LONG. She was a big Elvis fan and might have had tickets to see one of his final upcoming shows (Utica NY) but I'm not positive.
I'm still a fan of The King to this day...ROCK ON ELVIS!
Tried to convince my daughters that they had to watch just Elvis movies on TV today but it didn't fly....I didn't think it would, just curious what their reaction would be to such a mandate.
