I didn't say aliens weren't beleivable...merely in my opinion, aliens and Indy don't mix. I enjoy Indy films when they mix real history with earthly supernatural events. A nice blend of factual history and fictional adventure, but that just me.

In my other posts, I do compliment Skull for some lines and scenes. Here's the thing, some people liked Skull because it was Indiana Jones and because Harrison Ford was back in action! OK, I can see that. Ford is my favorite modern screen actor.

But here's something that's crossed my mind quite a bit over recent years...

Being a Star Trek fan, I know a few Trekkies who loved Voyager and Enterprise because they were part of Star Trek canon! But overall, those shows lacked the quality of story and writing of their predecessors. Arguable, of course, but that is the opinion of the majority I've spoken with and I happen to agree.

Being a Star Wars fan, I almost attended a convention a few years back with Mark Hamill in New Jersey...until I found out he was charging $100 for his autograph!

My point... there will always be those circles within any fandom that are populated with sheep. Lead them anywhere, they'll follow and dare not complain because they worship these films, actors, directors, whatever.

Sorry, but when filmmakers start off great, build up a loyal fan base, then get lazy over time and produce crap to "milk and bilk" those very same fans who made them rich, the fans should make it known and not just continue follow it.

Hamill's autograph...$100? I think not. I've paid far less for in person autographs from actors with far more impressive careers. But fans went, and fans paid.

Not saying that anyone here is like these "sheep" but personally, I was hoping for more out of Crystal Skull than what Lucas and Speilberg put into it. The old charm was gone. Even the test audiences were not overly impressed before its release. Will I buy it on DVD? Nope. I just wasn't that impressed, just like I won't buy Star Trek: Generations or Nemesis or Transformers 2.

Will I go see Indy 5? Absolutely!

Well...if you've ever read(or watched the Documentary)Chariots of the Gods, by Erich Von Daniken...it could be argued that it IS part of real history mixed with earthly supernatural events. Just a thought.

Hue, right. Sorry. Note to self. Don't hit the forums when I'm half asleep.

Actually, I did not like Mac or Mutt. Could have done without both of them but at least they did not make Sallah the traitor. At least they introduced a new character. Like Star Trek VI. Would have sucked to have Saavik as the traitor so they brought in a new character.

Although is it not interesting that Skull was made around the time when a few of the "old guys" were making one last film based on their most known characters?

Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard
Stallone in Rocky Balboa and Rambo (and another Rambo on the way!)

I'm sure I'm missing a few others but it seemed like a mini-trend was starting.

Oh absolutely. There are theories and beliefs that aliens visited Earth in the times of ancient Egypt, the Mayans, the American Indians, etc. Like Mulder, I WANT TO BELIEVE that such theories have merit.

But it just didn't work for me in Crystal Skull. All the power to fans that liked the movie. I'm glad you did! There are films that I like that many other people don't.

            It's all subjective.

Maybe they can bring back Sallah for a better written movie.

I am SO convinced that the lack of cooler plot twists
is what made the movie lamer plain and simple for me.

Everything in the first 3 movie that LED UP TO
              the ultimate prize was INTERESTING.

It was NOT so in KOTCS.

I've done this before, but I'll do it again...

Here's a list of what made the first three cool
              in that vein...

The Staff of Ra/Ra headpiece/Map Room/Toht's headpiece burnt hand,
The whole Thugee kid enslavery/heat ripping practice,
hypnotising blood of Kali, diamonds in stones glowing, betraying Shiva no-no/
The sheild marker/grail diary/map with no names/legend of the Knight Brothers
              etc. etc. stuff

They TRIED that kind of stuff with KOTCS and failed pretty badly IMO.

I couldn't even TRY to sum up the stuff that led up to ending "prize"
in KOTCS without being like "What the heck was the ACTUAL ENTIRE
              POINT of this or that."

There were all these skulls, there was putting skulls back,
and there was TAKING skulls, a lost city for some reason...
              I dunno...they lost me!

              Man, I love that trend.

And Willis virtually HAS to do one last DIE HARD because LFODH
              made so much effin' moolah!

Absolutely. IMHO, they only break down if you attempt to measure them by a standard not applicable to the serials themselves.... By that definition, they work beautifully (though some definitely succeed more than others, as you guys have already pointed out). Sometimes, you're just in the mood for popcorn ... plain and simple.

What's next, complaining that they are not enough like CSI??

I didn't mind the aliens thing. The first three riffed on '30s adventure serials, the last one riffed on '50s sci-fi movies. I think that's cool, and adds something interesting. For this reason I actually wish they would have gone a little further with the sci-fi stuff, and just executed it better. I didn't mind the nuked fridge -- Mutt swinging like Tarzan through a CGI forest, and Karen Allen driving the jeep onto a tree and then going down THREE waterfalls unscathed... those sequences bothered me a lot more. I think they should make some concessions to reality -- it's an Indiana Jones movie, not an episode of DuckTales!

But hey, as long as Harrison Ford and Spielberg are attached, I'm there.

Mac was the WORST. The bad guys stunk. The script tried to be cute more than exciting. Half the time everyone stood around arguing, and there was no sense of peril during the action scenes because all the characters kept laughing and smiling the whole time. Indiana Jones works best ALONE - not with a troop of idiots running around with him. I think everyone's forgotten what was good about the character, even to the point where nobody seemed to remember that Indy had a whip in most of the film.

To me it was just a complete mess with or without aliens.
