A Brainiac / Luthor duo would knock it out of the park... especially if Luthor was every bit as brilliant as Brainiac and in some sort of uneasy alliance...

That might seem like too many villains (and too powerful) for one movie, but if we restore Supes more to a Silver Age level, and play all villains without a bit of camp, it would work...

Again, as epic as possible and on a grand scale ... (Brainiac's ship, a cameo of Kandor .. etc...)

And with an older "kick-asteroid" Superman, nobody ( even with todays audiences) would snicker at the suit!

I kind of have mixed emotions, myself.

Watching it now, does kind of bother me, but I have such strong memories associated with seeing as a kid, that a part of me still loves all of it.

I will say this, after I saw the movie as a kid, it made George Reeves look silly and up until then, that was all I had so I loved the TV version.

Some new evil blood would be great, Brainiac, Bizarro, even Toyman ala the Timm cartoon could darken it a lot without having to darken Supes up any.

I thought the story was a real yawn fest on top of being crappy, and easily-adapted to daytime soaps.

However, I thought Routh and Spacey were very good, given the crap-fest plot. I don't fault them, at all, but I understand that because of the association, the power's that be wouldn't want them back. That's a shame in my opinion.

...And of course we need a decent villain...Lex Luthor has been used to death, so unless something totally new can be brought to the table with him that doesn't involve real estate fraud, he can sit this one out. It'd be neat if he was revealed as the puppet master behind the main villain though, setting the stage for a sequel.

I'd also pass on Tom Welling. Even with a few nice additions to the Supes mythos (Cloe for example), I'd prefer NOT to bring the Smallville extra baggage to the large screen. (The writers have had Tom "spinning his wheels" and pining over Lana for FAR too many years ... it took a toll on my interest, despite the occasional nice addition of comic based heroes and baddies guest stars).

I'd agree with thunderbolt 100%... an older more imposing superman... someone who looks like the MAN of STEEL, not the Boy of Styrene.

And I'd skip the long detailed origin story... open with a rescue scene of gigantic proportions .. add in just the necessary amount of rapid flashbacks (maybe even the same way they do in the Marvel movies... in the main title... Krypton...rocket... boom... Kents ... strong baby ... time passes .... Clark .. Daily Planet... ta da.. surprised villains) THEN begin the story....

Make it EPIC!! Make Superman someone who can really kick Asteroids!!

No to Tom "cry baby" Welling too. It really needs to be a fresh start, fresh cast. Somebody more rugged that looks believable smashing thru walls, unlike what we've had since the 1950's.

Could be...I'm not your average movie-goer---
    BUT
that first scene should be one for the ages...

Lex manipulating a dying elderly woman that he
apparently and positively sexed up to sign her assets
over to him THEN leaving and throwing his wig
to the youngest child relative in the room revealing
his "classic" bald head (Take THAT ego-ridden Hackman!).

SO much great stuff in that one minute

I'll give you SR-haters the benefit of the doubt
aboiut the REST of the movie

If that's gonna be a part of the result of a Supes movie that I like
and that has a chance for a sequel to it with continuity----then bring in
    soap-er-boy

("SUPERMAN: METROPOLIS" sounds like a great movie title to me!)
