Well I aint saying any of those guys are bad actors, they are certainly better than most of the lot out there today. Penn was in some cool stuff, You know I was never one to follow any particular actor (well I have a penchant for Kurt Russel and Kim Basinger) I mean every actor on this planet has been in some good stuff and some duds. And good to me and dud to me is going be 2 completly different things to you.
Jim carey was funny on Living Color. I think I was the only person in summer of 94 that didnt find Ace Ventura and Mask the funniest things in a hundred years. God I was also hating grunge and Greenday that summer to , but back on topic,
What I was getting at is I always hate watching 2 people bicker over actors. Its just one of those pointless arguements.

      Don't believe me?

Watch that movie again...and pay attention.

I really liked that movie. I was moved too.

If I have to pay THAT much attention to shoot down Penn's performance
it isn't worth it----just like it isn't worth it to be forced to LIKE someone's
      performance, eh?

That casting is better than any plot they could come up with for that movie.

I see Jim Carrey more as Shemp than Curly. Didn't Michael Chiklis play Curly in some made for TV job??

                >The Three Stooges were very short dudes...Jim Carrey and Benicio del Toro are both six-footers plus.

See.... that's the hip, new modern twist that brings the Stooges into the 21st century.

                >I wanna see the Moe guy hit Sean Penn in the head -- Like Moe used to do with Larry --- and see if Penn just whales on him

....y'know.... I would go see that.

                >What next? John Goodman and Ed Norton as Laurel and Hardy?

                SSSHHHHHH!!!!! They'll hear you!

                >Maybe storytelling is getting to the point where anything too radically new
will fail by major movie pictures standards?

That's been one of the things bothering me for a while. Not just that the studios make clones quicker than they did in the 40's; but that a lot of the AUDIENCE seems turned off by anything new or different. If I may segue into something I know a little better than movies; comic books, look at how many people bemoan the state of their old faves and won't touch something different. Or if they DO; it's still of the same genre. (Often the same company!) And the excuses for not trying something different are usually pretty superficial. ("The eyes bug me." Really? That's all it takes to completely turn you off? The novel plots, characters, consequence, depth, inventiveness takes a back seat to ONE design aspect?) Ultimately something new takes some work. You gotta learn new genre conventions, retool your expectations, etc. People won't do that. They're quite comfortable being pandered to.

So it's not just the evil execs rehashing the same old same old. We're ALL accountable.

                >Seek out independent films for the more creative stuff

I've found that even the independants have fallen prey to the same old same old. A distressing percentage of indies come across as cheapie versions of mainstream films with a desperate attempt to be "edgy" tacked on.

                >the question is, will they use an old franchise NAME to define it???

Yup. For the Stooges, I gotta wonder how much like the originals a new version would be. Are they gonna allow all the slapstick, or will it be kaiboshed 'cos they're afraid kids will try it in real life?

                Don C.

I don't even want to know how long it'll be before they do a "new" Marx Brothers.

Again...the Stooges we all really short dudes...

Larry and Moe were both 5' 4"...and Curly was 5' 5".

Penn is 5' 8", and both Carrey and del Toro are 6' 2".

                      HORRIBLE casting across the board.

^^ Hey Hec, is that Bud Abbott sans moustache in the first pic with the dog?

My favorite Penn films are Fast Times and Shanghai Surprise. I don't go in for all that drama Dead Man Walking crap.

I don't think "height" is a huge consideration in casting these kind of things...
unless it's someone that is famous for being "short"---Sammy Davis Jr,
                          Napolean Bonaparte, etc.

I gotta give this one a BIG FAT NO. I didn't even like when they switched Curlys. I know they had to, but I never liked Curly Joe, or Joe Besser. Shemp was okay by me.
