I wanna see the Moe guy hit Sean Penn in the head -- Like Moe used to do with Larry --- and see if Penn just whales on him

This is like seeing a remake of "A Hard Day's Night" starring a cover band. The Stooges were an act, somebody copying their routines for a movie, no matter how fine an "ac-tor" they are, is still pretty much a regional Bozo the Clown licensee.

Okay, okay I don't want to get into this "good as opposed to great" thing
          Hector....for a couple reasons.

          Firstly...
It's rare that I ever talk about "skill" to begin with---I'm more
interested in a the "end result" in ANY art form---it just so happens
that Penn appears to be exceptional on all fronts "recognized skill"
and "movies I've liked" etc. etc. and THAT'S why "skill" came up in this thread.

          Secondly,
Unfortunately (apparently for me, I guess) I am not that versed in
Daniel Day Lewis' achievements or, more importantly, his movies---
maybe if I was, I could compare and contrast, comment or criticize
          ---but I can't.

For what it's worth though, the bottom line is that I am a big fan of many of
Penn's movies....particularly WE'RE NO ANGELS, DEAD MAN WALKING,
CARLITO'S WAY, CASUALTIES OF WAR, HURLYBURLY and FAST TIMES
...and it seems Penn's diverse acting in those movies lives up to the critics' hype about how "skilled" Penn is.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

All those roles by Penn get smoked by Lewis' performance in There Will Be Blood...not even in the same universe, lol.

Ya know...I agree...but if I had the "skill" that the "ac-tor" has
that it took to take a shot at mimicking my heroes---I would
---heh----if I was a more flexible singer, talented in mimickry, you'd probably
be trading posts with a David Lee Roth impersonator in a VH tribute band

Yeah---some people take a lot of pride in paying tribute to legacies
and altho' many do not like that route, I admire that.

Hopefully when people do this stuff---they have that attitude---and
aren't looking only to "cash-in"----altho' admittedly "cashing in" is why
this basically happens in the first place.

I still think this is probably a joke.

                  There Will Be Blood.

Sorry you think some of my favorite performances in movies
are so insignificant----I don't know what to tell you---I like 'em

What next? John Goodman and Ed Norton as Laurel and Hardy?

Hollywood has really run out of ideas and this has just confirmed it.

The thing is they havent run out of ideas, they are just cheap. Rather than pay somebody who wrote a script , its easier for them to get something they own and remake it. They way these film companies go under and get absorbed by other companies they wind up with all kinds of "fresh" stuff they can use. Sure they may have to pay some copyright fees but thats alot cheaper than shelling out 20 million to some production company.
Also its the mindless sheeple that continue to buy into this crap that fuels it.
Its that mentality of "Oh its advertised on tv and so and so is in it must be good I cant think on my own anymore give me a britny spears cd did you see the beer ad during the superbowl wait where is my cellphone lets go to applebees"

Every time I hear "run out of ideas"----I feel the need to
repeat that there are a billion great ideas out here in Hollywood...
this all about "fear of risk on something new" than "lack of ideas".

And who's to say that's always a bad idea to take?

Maybe storytelling is getting to the point where anything too radically new
will fail by major movie pictures standards?

Seek out independent films for the more creative stuff---as always
most of what's gonna be released by major studios is gonna be rehash
and redos----the question is, will they use an old franchise NAME to
                          define it???

A good slapstick comedy featuring good actors and a good script?
If that's what a new movie is, then I say "go for it"
                          no matter WHAT it's named.

Forgive me if I don't take your advice...you very well know that
if I feel the need, I'll go to the mat...

I can point out my appreciation of Penn and my lack of idea on just
who Lewis is...so there's that...but then that's it on Lewis.

And the reason I won't go any further about how much I love Penn
and why...is because I think going too much into "skill" is a misstep
---again, to me, it's much more about the final product and
the context of what an artist/actor brings to my personal specific
appreciation of that final product not merely how well he can "emote".

Check out Penn's overrated role in Dead Man Walking.

He can't even shed a tear...when he cries...his eyes are not even watery, lol.

                                Don't believe me?
