    What Are the Stressy Jobs?

I have always heard people talking about Job Stress. What are Stressy Jobs? I mean, I have been doing Sr 911 Dispatch for the Houston Fire Dept for about 2 yrs now. Before that my job with Long Beach (NY) Police Dept had me doing 911 phones, radio dispatch, Prisoner Bookings, Crime Scene photography and Impounds as well as frequent uniformed patrol. On the plus side, I don't drink more than a 6 pack of beer a year, no illicit drugs, 2 kids under the age of 5. I don't FEEL stressed out...Maybe I am nd just don't know it...

Maybe it's not the job, it's the person. If I had your job as a dispatcher I'd be drinking heavily, but you take it in stride. My job coloring in cartoons makes me stressed out, for Pete's sake.

I guess it all depends on the person. The same job can be stressful for one person, but not for someone else. As a journalist I love racing against the clock, getting that deadline. But some of my colleagues almost break down when the deadline approaches

The medical field is very stressful. I worked in hospitals on an observation unit, ICU, med-surg, and ER---none of those were nearly as stressful as working in a nursing home, though (understaffing was bad). Working on the medical staff in prisons/jails was not nearly as stressful for me, but seemed very stressful to the detention officers and street cops. Doing pharmaceutical research was the worst, though, b/c half the time you're "selling" patients and doctors on becoming part of the study and the other half of the time you're dealing with principle researchers who want you to make sure the results skew the direction the drug companies want.

Now I teach English at a university and have almost no stress.

I was a paramedic for five years that was stressful at times,Now I am a nightwatchman for a 96 acre zoo,all alone....Sometimes it's stressful looking over my shoulder every ten minutes...Especially if I'm listening to coast to coast...???

Just about everything stresses me out...and I have very little responsibility...
guess it depends on the person as many people have already said.

I think past experience helps bring it into perspective. As a locksmith, I was always stressed out having to lock people out (divorce, foreclosure, etc.), but when I moved to an office job in a call center, I didn't understand how the other managers could be so stressed out over phone calls.

I think air traffic controller is rated as one of the highest stress jobs out there.

I agree it depends on the person. Like Thomas, I love the so-called stress of the news world. I remember not being that stressed at all when that plane landed in the Hudson a couple of weeks ago (especially when we quickly learned everybody was OK). To me, that's like game time- I have to get on the air immediately while coordinating all of our crews in the field and our staff in the newsrrom. When its over, I feel the same as I do after winning a soccer match!

I work with teens with behavioural problems, which definitely has it's stressful moments (assults on staff, suicides etc), and I hope to be working in Federal Corrections as a correctional officer whith in the next year or so. Strangly enough, the general consensus is that the majority of stress comes from co-workers and managment, not the inmates.
