I think your latter staement is true the former is not. They have TONS of fresh material presented daily. The problem is you might have the next Star Wars but you are more likely to have the next Bangkok Dangerous (It was out this year - have you even heard of it?). With a bankable name even a bad movie like Planet of the Apes or Hulk can get the numbers in the black.

I don't work up a lot of emotion over remakes. Sometimes when they are really bad and agenda based I shake my head, like the The Day The Earth Stood Still. Still, the remakes almost always serve a good purpose of getting a newly transferred state of the art version of the old movie out on DVD and Blu-Ray. I doubt the original DDEST would be out on blu-ray so quickly without the remake they want to promote with it.

Which reminds me, I hope they remake Logan's Run so that a better up to date transfer of the original movie will be done.

Did anyone think it was weird that Arnold from 'Happy Days' played Mr. Miyagi? Always wondered who would win a street fight between him and the Fonz!!! The Fonz was tough but Miyagi knew Karate.

"Jackie Chan Will Play Mr. Miyagi in New Karate Kid
                    Thursday January 15, 2009
According to EW, Jackie Chan will play Mr. Miyagi in a remake of The Karate Kid by Sony Pictures. He will serve as the mentor to 10 year old Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The movie will film entirely in China.

Another Karate Kid is sure to spark some curiosity, and it will be interesting to see the spin that Chan puts on the old Pat Morita character. On the other hand, it sure will be hard for this film to live up to the old one. In other words, there's a distinct possibility that the new version of this film might be another one of those 'wish they hadn't made it' remakes.

Kind of like Planet of the Apes, you know? So it's wait and see time for Karate Kid fans."

I Loved the originals , I don't think they should remake these though. I heard a lot of 80's films are on the remake block , some of my fav's I have heard I just dont think they should. Here's a few I have heard about recently....

                        The Fonz wins.

Karate is really not that effective in a fight.

Boxing is so much more effective...watch these three boxers spar with these three karate fighters...

                        YouTube - boxing vs karate

The karate guys are not black belts...but the boxers are just amateurs...not pro boxers...so it's pretty even in terms of experience.

                        The Fonz could box.

Fonz KOs Miyagi in one round.

                          BTW...I love the first Karate Kid...I think it's a semi-classic...a real feel-good movie.

Yeah, like Damien said...GO KOBRA KAI!!!

the 1st KK is a movie I grew up with and love ... yeah I see the cheese that is dripping off it ... and love some of the alter endings people have done on youtube. johnny wins etc.

2nd one has an ok story, but the fight at the end is pure BS ... no way could daniel win that one.

a new KK is just crazy ... after that 4th one they made I don't even see how they think the Karate Kid name will sell a movie.
