>Most remakes stink, but they aren't meant for us. They're meant for kids.
Dunno if I agree with that. The idea of doing a remake is name recognition, and to have that you need people who remember the name and get warm fuzzies over it. Kids wouldn't care about an "A-Team" movie, or a "Dukes of Hazard" 'cos they're before their time. It's the older folks you're trying to sway. But then you run into the problem we were discussing in a Comic Book thread: you've got the old fans, who aren't 12 any more and are gonna need something new to make the remake worthwhile. But you've got to do it in a way that doesn't really come across as new; else you break continuity and make them angry. So usually you play it safe; make the standard film with the new name, hope the name brings in enough old fans the first week to make your money, and maybe the explosions and boobs will sway a new crowd. (At which point you can reinvigorate the franchaise.) If not.... well, it's really the opening week that counts and we can always make ANOTHER film. (I hear "Man From Atlantis" is a cheap license....)
....and possibly pick up a couple bucks from a dvd release of the original....
>thee sooner we don't have to suffer these pointless whine-baby threads.
I think it's venting. I can understand. Seeing what gets made and what becomes a hit is absolutely heartbreaking for me. It's like nobody has any imagination any more, and nobody's willing to take a chance on something different. (And I mean the FANS too.)

Okay, count me "guilty"---I could basically sustain off of anything
I've already seen from here on out.
Once in a while, some new movie excites me but it's very rare.
It's just odd to be reading these "vents" so much on these boards.
I feel like I'm observing someone's lifefabric being destroyed some times
by things they can just as easily ignore.
I probably take the posts more literally than they are intended.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

Well.... no; I think you're right on there....

Pretty much. I find it interesting what bothers people, and what doesn't. So I kinda see it all as a measure of the tastes of the person making the post more than an actual critique.

Yeah, I get that too. My problem is that about ten minutes into any film I can guess who the target audience is, and from there it's almost impossible not to guess what's going to happen. It's not intentional, it sort of happens. The movie that killed movies for me was "Gladiator." Went and saw it with a bunch of friends and we were giving the lines before the actors. It was THAT predictable.
Part of it is my fault. I've watched a LOT of movies, and spent a lot of time figgering out how to write stuff. So what I look for is different from most people. Sometimes it's tough for me to empathise with folks about entertainment. For instance; I couldn't stand the original "Karate Kid." So the enjoyment of watching a remake eludes me.
But if someone likes it and raves about it, I get a chance to find out what the appeal is.
