DATA: Lord Vader, as a Starfleet officer, I must remind you that carrying lightsaber weapons aboard a galaxy-class starship is strictly prohibited. I'm afraid that that the energy-matrix of your weapon could concieveably interfere with the operation of this ship's inertial dampers, warp coolant-containment systems, tachyon-pulse emitters, or shield frequency compensators.
I'm afraid I'll have to confiscate your weapon for the duration of your visit to avoid any undue hazzards the ship's systems.
DATA: If you prefer to a carry a weapon, I'm certain that Captain Picard will have no objections to you being issued a phaser. But I WILL have to confiscate that lightsaber, sir.
Data touches the communicator on his lapel as he draws his phaser and trains it on Darth Vader.
DATA: Security detail to transporter room three. Intruder alert.
Data puts genuine earnestness in his voice as he pulls the trigger on his phaser.
DATA: My apologies sir.
Data fires a single blast in Darth Vader's direction. But the dark lord's lightsaber springs into action and delects the bolt directly into the android's cranium, shorting out his positronic relays. Data slumps heavily to the deck, reduced to a lifeless husk of fried circuitry.
An amused Darth Vader walks over to Data's smoking corpse.
VADER: Apology accepted, Pinoccio-boy.
With a dramatic swirl of his cape, Vader storms from transporter room 3.
Regarding midicholorians. I for one think adding them into SW lore
was indeed a mistake----plotwise, Lucas needed something that would
solidly inspire Qui Gon to bring Anakin into the Jedi---and the midicholorians
idea was the best route Lucas could come up with. Personally, I would have
went a less techinical, more cheesier route by having Anakin do certain
things that only a Jedi could do, akin to the Pod Race---but more stuff too.
But really, back to the main topic, we all know both franchises have their weak spots where mistakes were made with stupid plot points, even
whole stories---episodes or movies---and times where canon
was incongruent---etc., etc.
Personally, I'd rather just focus on what made SW and ST fun franchises
for our culture---and most importantly myself, to lock on to.
Again, personally, STAR WARS was the winning franchise....and again,
I do have a special spot in my heart for STAR TREK---mostly due to TNG.
Some of my favorite Trek moments though are when TNG and TOS crossed over. (Relics, Unification...and, yes, even GENERATIONS)
With the "new" Trek---it's sad that even though at it's most successful
Kirk, Spock and crew will see a huge rebirth---Picard, Data and crew
will most likely be lost to history----oh well---can't win 'em all

Do you remember that time when STAR TREK was such a popular franchise over STAR WARS that all of the Trek action figures and spaceships and playset toys outsold STAR WARS by like a ratio of 100 to 1?
Or do you remember when STAR WARS toys became so unpopular with kids and collectors that retailers everywhere virtually refused to even carry them and instead chose to devote entire sections of their stores to the far more popular STAR TREK toys?
Or how about earlier this year when the new USS Enterprise toy outsold the new Hasbro Millennium Falcon by a margin of like 100 to 1?
Remember that?
No?? You DON'T remember any of that, you say?
Yeah... well... I guess you wouldn't...
BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bwaaah. ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!! .
Never get why people equate sales or popularity with quality. Billy Joel sells more albums than Elvis Costello so that makes him the better musician? Don't think so. Man, I swear i've seen this arguement before.

The "popularity" argument doesn't particularly "help" but it doesn't
particularly "hurt" either....it sure does help tally up some points.

Didn't we have this conversation a couple of months ago?
Do we really need to go there again?
Shall we argue about it again?
Are we caught in a time-loop?
Can we perhaps have a separate SW vs ST section, with no rules whatsoever. A Celebrity Death Match?
That way, I can avoid it completely.....

I think when comparing quality versus popularity, STAR WARS certainly has done a LOT more than merely tally up points... even in this decades-long debate over the two franchises.
In the case of STAR WARS, a high quality level of entertainment IS a big reason for its commercial success.
Love George Lucas or hate him, it is undeniable that he constructed the world of STAR WARS carefully, painstakingly, imaginatively, innovatively and with a LOT of the industry's highest-quality artistic talent working on his team.
Furthermore, while building his STAR WARS creation, George Lucas did more for the technical advancement of high-quality film making, high-quality film exhibition (in theaters and at home), and high-quality film restoration/ preservation / archival than just about anyone else in recent memory.
Personally, I'll never "get" the high-brow notion that believes that just because something is popular or sells well that it must be crap.
Personally, I do not agree. Certainly NOT in the case of STAR WARS.
As a multi-media franchise, the enormous commercial success of STAR WARS crosses generational, religious, racial, economic, and cultural lines.
If THAT'S not a sign of quality, I don't know what is.

Both men are talented succesful musicians. Personally, I prefer Billy Joel's work.
^^ You were the one equating monitary success in the toy aisles with the franchise's success. I don't care for the peeps that think when something or someone becomes a hit the artist is a sell out.
The more I watch of Star Wars with adult eyes, the more luster it loses. I really don't think the first 3 films were any better than the 3 prequels.

Ouch!
Okay...here's my deal about those first 3 SW films---I like them a lot--
they are, like, some of my favorite movies...heck, NEW HOPE really IS my
favorite.
Would I say they are REALLY that good though?
Would I, in good conscience RECOMMEND THEM to others?
I really doubt it.
I think it's because they really ARE "kids movies"---and, in many respects,
I really still AM a "kid"----the movies are fun to me and I like the toys
they inspired---they're pretty (and they remind me of my childhood--
-which is cool for me personally)
I don't want to totally crap on my beloved films though---even as a
"rational adult", I still contend that the STAR WARS series is a great
reimagining of typical "hero myth"----but I'm more a fan of LUKE's story
than DARTH's.
It's much easier to emphasize with the naive, good intentioned farm boy
than whatever the heck ya wanna call Anakin.
Maybe it's just coincidence that the only prequel trilogy film
I totally can get into has a cameo from my man Luke---or maybe
Lucas was running low on "suck" by the time got to SITH
Anyways that's my two cents on SW as "actual great movies"
vs. "just a good time" bunch of movies (that happened to change cinema
culture a few times over).
