But for a feature film Batman? I just can't see it happening in our lifetime after the Schumacher "Batman And Robin" debacle. Though, I admit, the more I think about the crazy cycles that trends repeat... well, it seems more possible to me now than it did when I originally said "Not a chance"

      >The overlooked factor in all of this is gaming.

That's a good point. I gotta wonder how much is co-ordinated between the games, movies, toys cartoons and comics. They're all different companies but they're all coming from the same origin point. I could see the games influencing the movies, but I think a lot of the games is the end result of taking stuff from the comics a few steps along. And mixing in some conventional thinking. SOme of that creep is intentional, some not. Some comes from individuals working on the projects. Hell; some come from companies using the same design houses for their stuff.

One odd thing that struck me; a lot of the folks who are rooting for more "shared world" films and tv shows are also the folks who lament the decline in the actual comics.... What if the shared movie and tv worlds is actually a calculated move to get AWAY from the comics.... like the parent companies think they've lost their usefulness.

      >the more I think about the crazy cycles that trends repeat... well, it seems more possible to me now than it did when I originally said "Not a chance"

Yeah; it's a tough call, but I firmly believe that everything is cyclical and that eventually EVERY permutation comes back around. The Wacky Bats pokes his head up every so often but hasn't got any real exposure, but all it takes is for one thing to hit and then EVERYONE will go that route. For Wacky Bats I think it'll take a return of the "comics and cartoons IS for kids!" attitude, but amongst my generation of fans I've seen that very feeling crop up with no insignificant frequency. It's out there. If the comics get squeezed out you might see a return to kiddie stuff from them.... out of desperation, but it's ALWAYS like that. (Schwartz didn't demand more gorillas from DC 'cos he thoughyt they were an important storytelling tool....) And if THAT takes off for the comics, you'd eventually see it trickle into other permutations.

There may be more cross-pollination among Warner's efforts with DC's properties now and in the future than in the past. Jay Olivia drew the storyboards for Man of Steel and will also be doing them for Batman/Superman and he directs some of the DC animated films and has worked on the animated TV series. Geoff Johns' role as CCO is to coordinate between DC proper and the video games, animated films and series, toys, TV and films.

Johns probably isn't calling any major shots with the live-action films after the GL flop, but he's a voice in the process that had been absent until the last few years. And by virtue of his stronger influence in TV, video games, animation and very heavy hand with the comics, his work and the work of the other comics creators should seep into the films, particularly if a JLA movie is ever realized.

That JLA movie could end up being very similar to Injustice, which of course would offend old timers like me greatly, but fire some of the teens and 20somethings up. Unfortunately their dollar is one Warner and DC is courting.

If Max Martini ends up as Batman, than all you non-believers better find a church, because this is a sign from on high.

If you've never watched The Unit, go check it out. Or the Mamet MMA film, Red Belt. The dude comes from that Kurt Russell/Biehn/Rooker/Olyphant school. His voice is perfect.

I can't find a clip of him from The Unit when he goes ballistic, which was often. He's the real deal and much better than the names being thrown around.

Of those mentioned in the article, I like Brolin and Martini best. They are older, but Batman could have been working underground in Gotham and be thought of as an urban legend outside of Gotham until he goes public to check out Superman.

I'd rather them take a chance on Hoechlin than go with Gosling, Armitage or Goode. Maganeillo doesn't fit Batman either; might work as Hawkman.

Gosling could be Flash or recast as Hal Jordan.
