I won't go into too many specifics, as my mind is still absorbing everything, but I left the theater with a big goofy grin on my face.

A lot of the crap we heard about this film...just not true. Several iconic elements we heard are not in this ARE.

The cast was great. Everyone really gave it their all and seemed really engaged. The effects are astounding. The story is tight.

This is Superman for today. I love Chris Reeve and his films, but new generations deserve their own versions, and they got one.

If you EVER liked Superman, or just good solid sci-fi flicks, go see this NOW!!!

    Chris
I saw it last night and was truly blown away, and I saw it in 3D. And I can also be counted as leaving the theater with a goofy geek grin on my face. This IS the new Superman movie of this current era. Forget Superman Returns. Man of Steel truly delivers. And true, the humor is lacking, but there is some in there. Just not campy or goofy, but the humor moments really do compliment the mood of this movie. Henry Cavill is to me, the new definitive Superman for a new generation and era. I loved that there is action on this Krypton and that's all I will say. ACTION!! Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, and Russell Crowe were all outstanding. The flying sequences and special effects blew me out of my seat! Since Perry White is African American, I was really impressed with Lawrence Fishburne. He did an excellent job as the editor of the Daily Planet. The only major element missing from this movie is Jimmy Olsen, who I guess would be considered the Robin of the Superman movies. Man of Steel is the only media version of Superman other than the Fleisher Cartoons of the 40's that didn't have the cub reporter. I'm glad there is a sequel in the works. I know I'm going to see this movie again. Two thumbs up!!

Waid has a pretty strict idea of what Superman is. I know he disagreed with making Superman make wrong decisions in Kingdom Come, when he was asked to flesh out Alex Ross' rough concepts. So he fundamentally disagrees with his most famous work on the character.

It's on his blog. Basically he had major issues with how Superman ultimately dealt with Zod.

As much as I enjoy Waid's work, I find his opinions colored by who is is on good terms with or not at the moment. Because there is a ton of Waid Superman in it. His big deal is the alien aspect of Superman and the alienation he feels and that is all over this movie. It certainly borrows from his Birthright series, but it also has a lot of Byrne, whom Waid doesn't care for, in it to, especially Krypton, which is kind of a cross between the silver-age wonder of Binder and Seigle's Superman stories dealing with his home planet and Byrne's turning it on its head making it a cold, sterile and failed view of Utopia or progress. It also takes a note or two from Waid's Boom comic that was basically a Superman gone bad comic in its tone. But, if he didn't like it he didn't like it.

Waid is also a big fan of the Donner films and while there are little nods to it in this movie, in basically retelling much of the same story from Superman and Superman II, many choices were made to go contrary to that film. But like Batman Begins, this Superman is just learning the ropes and is not particularly good at protecting humans, yet. If there are more films made, I hope the storytellers show us that because after this movie, I would think the people of the film's universe would be very scared of Superman unless they had personally met him and seen his altruism.

But this sets up a ton of opportunities for stories with Luthor and possibly even a reason for Batman not to just concentrate on Gotham if Warners does make a Superman vs. Batman movie.

I have a feeling I know why Waid doesn't like the movie and it's a pretty specific reason, but it would be a spoiler to tell what I think it is. And, I can see why he would not like what happens, and I really get why and am a bit ambivalent about it myself, but I understand Goyer and Snyder's choice, which is similar to a choice made by another Superman creator, whom I won't name because it would give up a key part of the film.

This is a very dark story and like Nolan's Batman movies not a particularly fun story, and some fans will be put off by it. But it is a very cool story that doesn't pull it's punches in terms of what it would be like if aliens of that power battled among frail mankind.

What I don't care about many of the reviews I've read so far is that I don't think some critics are reviewing it as a film on its own merits. There's an attitude of why remake Superman, there are too many Super hero movies already and why waste time with a 75 year old property everyone has seen before. I guess I understand that, but heck I'd be happy to watch a superman movie every year if they made one.

Don't forget "Birthright". I hear there a few nods to that storyline in the movie.

Anthony, that's what I figured about Waid's reason for not liking the movie, and it's valid. But his reason won't really resonate with fans who aren't dyed-in-the-wool comic book Superman fans.

And it didn't bother me so much because of the circumstances and Superman's relative inexperience at being Superman in the context of the film.

I haven't seen the film yet but the reviews I've read are a little too reliant on the idea that Donner (and subsequently Lester) created the perfect Superman movie(s). I'm not putting those movies down but they have their flaws too.

One reviewer had me with the Reeves Vs Cavill comparison, that is unavoidable. However, comparing Shannon to Stamp? Stamp's a great actor but he's playing Zod a l'il camp.

Yeah most mainstream folk watching the movie don't have Superman's Social Security number memorized like Waid does...

I can understand why Waid would be put off by that moment. It's different. But not without some amount of precedent.

Yes, Waid wrote Birthright, and some of that is in here, but that series was quickly dismissed by DC as non-canon, so I feel it never got much ground underneath it. Kingdom Come is probably his most famous treatment of the character.

I saw it last night, Wow! This is Superman! Finally a movie with real threats and showcasing how power and struggle when to go full out of stay hidden.

                      Exactly.

I really like that the sci-Fi aspects of Superman were used so well. I would love to see a version of the old Superman story, maybe issue 141 or 140, where he goes to Krypton before it's destruction and meets his parents set in this film's version of Krypton.

After the Krypton opening, the movie has a x-files quality featuring Lois that I quite enjoyed.

There is a lot of Alan Moore's Miracle Man in the film too. Zod isn't as sadistic as Young Miracle Man, but he's definitely not worried about stepping on some ants to reach his goal.

                          Saw it this afternoon...

I was hugely impressed by the action sequences, particularly the battle scenes between Kal and Zod & his crew.
There's a real weight to the epic slugfests, which conveys the power of the combatants effectively.

The suit does look good in action, although I still think it's a tad too dark.

The interpretation of Krypton is very interesting in this movie... regarding their society, culture and history.

Won't say much more, as this is a non-spoiler thread.

Henry Cavill is great as Superman. He made a big impression and I'm really looking forward to sequels.

Superman belongs to siegel and shuster and it's been open to interpretation ever since.....Man of Steel is the latest and 20 years from now or less it will be updated again.......
