Man of Steel Review - Spoiler Free

    WOW.

They did it. They made a Superman movie that gave people everything they've been asking for in Superman film, but hadn't seen yet. And it WORKS. Cavill WORKS. You believe he is Superman. That is no small task...and he pulls it off.

I won't go into too many specifics, as my mind is still absorbing everything, but I left the theater with a big goofy grin on my face.

A lot of the crap we heard about this film...just not true. Several iconic elements we heard are not in this ARE.

The cast was great. Everyone really gave it their all and seemed really engaged. The effects are astounding. The story is tight.

This is Superman for today. I love Chris Reeve and his films, but new generations deserve their own versions, and they got one.

If you EVER liked Superman, or just good solid sci-fi flicks, go see this NOW!!!

Couldn't agree more! It was AWESOME! I to left with a big goofy grin on my face. Can't wait to see it in Imax 3D. Cavill was great and the suit is fantastic, any doubts about the suit will be gone by the end of the movie.

I've been in internet silence mode with this movie this week, but now understand reviews have been mixed. I can't understand how anyone can not feel they got a good Superman movie out of this. If they were expecting something else...go see a different movie!

Chris, you posted your thread while I was writing mine or I would have posted here. If the moderators want to close it, my post fits here fine.

Totally agree with you about the mixed reviews. the only thing I can think of is that the movie is so intense that it might have caught some off guard.

Here's what I wrote in the other thread:

OK, wow, Man of Steel was something else. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Very tempted to call it the best super hero movie ever, but I know that's probably me just being on some kind of Kryptonian geek high right now.

David Goyer perhaps gave Superman the greates gift they could receive with the script and Zac Snyder took what Goyer wrote and really delivered an excellent movie.

The film takes bits and pieces from many of the various Supeman incarnations and mixes thouse bits and pieces to perfection, while adding a few twists to really give the film some zing. Huge Sci-Fi angle to the movie and some of those early tweets about Lois Lane not having a key role in the film, well, those folks must have had a extended stay in the John. Folks who have read Alan Moore's Marvelman series will also recognize the impact that work had on Goyer. But the influences go on fron Seigle and Shuster to John Byrne and Alex Ross to Morrison and Johns to Mark Waid and Kurt Busiek.

Goyer knows His Superman, and anyone who was offended by his short story where it seemed he had Superman renounce his Americanism, well there is a great scene which could serve as a Mea culpa.

Cavil is great in the role and Amy Adams is solid. Shannon, Costner, Lane and Crowe were all excellent in the film.

I don't know how the general public will respond to the movie, but The more you know and like Superman - unless you are demanding strict adhearance to a specific incarnation - the more you should appreciate the film.

That being said if you want to nitpick the movie, like with any fantasy film you can. But try to reframe from doing that and enjoy the movie. All involved did their best to deliver with this movie, and to me they did.

I'm predicting is going to be easily my favorite modern superhero flick...I mean...Chris Reeve's Superman will always be number one...but Man of Steel can certainly join it side by side...I have that feeling that it will.

^I think you are right. The movie WISELY takes a different angle than Superman: The Movie, but both serve Superman very well.

Thanks for the reviews, fellas!!! I'm now chomping at the bit even more to see this than I was before! I have a feeling Tom and I will be walking out of the theaters with the same goofy grin you guys have all had! Just goes to show that movie critics REALLY don't understand SUPERMAN or the fact that this is no longer 1978!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Yes, seeing it at 59% is depressing.

One criticism I'm reading that is apt is that there're is little to no humor to the film. That's a valid point. While Cavil embodies the character with goodness and hope and charm, there is no light touch in the film. No silliness or camp. As dark as Nolan's Batman films were, Snyder's MOS is as dark on a much grander scale. The stakes of the film are genocide and extinction or nearly so for one species of sentient beings or another.

Now I do believe the movie has heart and that you do care for the characters, but it is an intense film.

There were a few lighter moments, but they are few. I'd rather have it this way, since the situations are all intense. Throwing in a goofy moment just to get a laugh always seems cheap to me. I wish critics could just critique a movie based on it's own merits, not what they WANTED to see.

                              Really? Did he say why?

Waid has a pretty strict idea of what Superman is. I know he disagreed with making Superman make wrong decisions in Kingdom Come, when he was asked to flesh out Alex Ross' rough concepts. So he fundamentally disagrees with his most famous work on the character.
