Man, if I was good at posting photos, a Raiders "Now, you're getting nasty." screencap would be in order.

Okay. I guess I see where you're coming from.

But to give you a better perspective on why I've been probing here: IF Giamatti was doing the same exact thing in that picture with the addition of him being in Rhino form ... or, better yet, if Giamatti was holding Norman Osbourne's severed head in one hand with his other hand on the steering wheel, *then* my attitude wouldn't be so quizzical

P.S. Superhero films, after all, are supposed to (largely) have qualities of "action films"--- it's almost like if you're too hard on "over the top" ideas in these kind of movies, it then seems counter-productive to what the movies are supposed to inherently be. In other words, if "camp" and "over the top" are inseperable, that would make Avengers the campiest movie of all time, just about.

Again, it's out of context. I'll judge it when I see it.

I liked ASM. Liked it much better than Spidey 3. I'm a fan of the Nolan Bat-films, but even I will admit they titter on the brink of taking themselves TOO seriously.

    Wow! I couldn't agree more.

I'm kind of surprised that multiple people here feel the way I do about Batman Begins and ASM. I sincerely did not expect that. I should savor this while I can.

You are incorrect that I am a fan of ASM. I much preferred the Raimi trilogy and thought ASM was as flat as you did. If you are curious why my attitude has painted me differently, it's because I'm seeing a lot of posts that come off unjustified or undefined to me, and so I've been asking questions and pointing out things to you guys to try to get a better idea of why there's such negativity particularly towards what may or may not be in ASM2. I appreciate your detail as well as your concession that we may have didfferent definitions as to what constitutes something being defined as "camp".

To me Raimi and Burton play with intentional camp, while I thought Amazing Spider-man was un-intentionally campy, so maybe I'm being inaccurate or unclear with my use of the word, but I see the as two slightly different things.

Throughout Raimi's Spider-man I thought there was a lot of fun campy ingredients, like those psychedelic quick montages with fire and skulls (kinda plagiarized his own work from Darkman, I thought). Also, the performances were generally over-the-top. I enjoyed that about the Raimi movies - i thought that made them more wild and fun. The third one just didnt work for me though.

I found Amazing Spider-man flat. It just didn't engage me. To me it's campiness is exemplified in the telling of the origin. In the Raimi version he went with something closer to the 60s comic version - the crazy wrestling scenes leading up to the thief Parker lets go. Its all a little wild and larger than life. to me it was fun. The new version tries for something I guess they thought was more low-key and realistic, but it didn't feel more believable to me, it seemed just as implausible, but less fun, so I think it backfired. The Lizard was as cheesy as any b-movie I've ever seen, but it was like they were trying so hard to treat what was happening seriously that it just made me think about how unintentially silly it all was. Night of the Lepus comes to mind - as a more extreme case.

Clearly you're a fan, and that's cool - I'm not saying that you shouldn't have enjoyed it, and I'm not trying to take anything away from you. I'm just blowing off steam by teasing because I was disappointed.

I've been in a Tor frame of mind as of late. There's a reason that'll hopefully become clear soon.

I think you're right. If you're TRYING to be camp, you're not camp; you're engaging in parody. If you're self-consciously doing a superhero film that screams "No! this is SERIOUS!" you're doing camp.

    >it looks like something straight out of Raimi's films...which were intentionally campy in parts

Wait.... I sport the Tor Johnson look like the dude in the pic. Does that make ME camp?

    ....or am I parody?

You name dropped Tor Johnson. Therefore, in addition to being cool, you are FRIEND FOR TOR!!!

So, tell me.... What's Batman Begins, again? "Camp" or "NOT camp"?

    Amusing.

Between you and Brian we have "camp = overseriousness" piled onto "camp = Paul Giamatti's presence" equalling "a double-helping of spidey-prejudice"... this Spider-sequel is turning out to be a regular 60's Batman episode and we haven't even seen the trailer yet.

That's gotta be his pre-Rhino look. I'm less worried now that I've seen Electro. Still not happy about the casting choice there or lack of costume, but he does look like the ultimates version of the character, and i have to admit, is pretty freaking scary looking.
