I don't count Superman 3 or 4. Especially Superman 3. I actually like about 80% of Superman Returns. It loses me by the climax.

You guys are way over thinking this. If you go by Superman: The Movie, Superman II, forget Superman III and IV and include Superman Returns, Superman's career was also pretty short. It doesn't seem too much time has transpired between the first two films, and then Superman goes off to find Krypton...

Yeah, IF you count Superman Returns...which I don't. Just cause Bryan Singer tried to rewrite history doesn't make it so.
Christopher Reeve was Superman from 1978 to 1987, and presumably flew off to continue fighting indefinitely at the end of Superman IV.

Same with the first four Batman films...despite the recasting, it's supposed to be the same universe with Michael Gough playing Alfred in all four films. Bruce Wayne is Batman from 1989 to 1997 and beyond as he runs off into the night with Robin and Batgirl.

The thing is...his career is so ridiculously short in the Nolan trilogy, it makes the whole "dressing up as a bat" thing pointless and stupid. He could have been just as scary wearing ninja clothes and a skull-faced ski-mask without needing to order 10,000 cowls.
Also, being Batman less than a year and operating mostly out of the public eye, I doubt he would be a legend or be remembered at all after an eight year absence. Kinda like the Spice Girls. That's just society today. People might occasionally say "Remember that whacko who ran around in a batsuit years ago? Wonder whatever happened to him?"

Well.... it comes and goes. The very original would straight up murder folks. Then they added Robin, and he'd still murder folks, but with a smile and one liner. Then post Wertham he was all kddified, then the 60's/early 70's one was pretty upright, but they played things up close to a horror movie. Then in the 80's he was all gritted teeth.... Now the movies seem to want to follow the comic trend, with cycles of styles.

I was okay with Bruce finally getting a happy ending. It was the supposed 8 year hiatus and some of the other plot-holes that got to me. Like why didn't Lucias Fox flood the place where they were holding their clean energy thingy?

Much like Earth 2 Chris, I was seeing a Terry McGinniss Batman Beyond thing going on. I'd actually go see a Batman Beyond movie that picks up after Rises but I know they wont be making that. Or Nightwing Begins, but again...wont happen.

This is why I hate the Nolan suck films. His run with Batman is done and I am thankful. Now hopefully we can get someone in there that isn't a piece of garbage like Nolan and his crap view of the Batman franchise. He needs to go write some Steel Magnolia type films and stay away from super heroes. Nolan and Schumacher should be the two guys who are credited for almost killing the Batman franchise with their lame, crap ideas.
Thank you Nolan for making me believe in you (That you had a good Batman movie plot up your sleeve) and then you turned around and urinated in my Cheerios. People like you should be banned from ever making super hero movies ever again!

The psychotically obsessed Batman is actually a fairly new wrinkle to the character, mostly coming from Miller's Dark Knight. Denny O'Neil often wanted Batman to walk off in the sunset with Talia, and even had him do so in his last story for DC in the 70s before migrating to Marvel editorial. And of course the Earth Two Batman wed Catwoman and retired. I like my Batman more mentally healthy, personally.

^^^ I don't think it's out of choice, as much as physical restraints and the understanding someone else can adopt the cowl. He's a broken man by this point who has paid a lifetime's worth of pain to have this fitting retirement from the darkness of his life.

This why the third movie failed for me (I love the second!). The Batman that I know and love is psychotically obsessed with fighting crime. The man IS Batman while Bruce Wayne is the fake identity. It's hard for me to rationalize how brief of time he fights crime/acts out his psychosis and then simply retires to some small Italian villiage. It just doesn't work for me.
