Batman Family/Detective Comics?

I highly recommend TwoMorrow's Giordano bio by Michael Eury. Great book.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Giordano, but I did correspond with him a time or two. A perfect gentleman. Said to be one of the nicest guys in the industry to boot.

Only two other artists were Giordano's peers for drawing believable, but sexy women: John Romita and Nick Cardy.

Batman was Giordano's favorite character, since childhood. It shows. Loved his Robin too. Even moreso than Adams, he made Robin actually look like a young adult, and not just a 15-year old in college.

Loved those $1 comics. Adventure with the JSA, Deadman, New Gods, Aquaman among others. World's Finest with Don Newton's Captain Marvel, Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter plus the lead feature. Detective/Batman Family was always fun. Loved Mr. and Mrs. Superman in Superman Family.

Dollar Comics...back when comic books were fun...

It was always a thrill on the rare occasions where I was able to get a dollar comic back then as a little kid... Crammed with so much material and different characters.

Looking back now, it was obviously a response to magazine retailers beginning to reject comics, given how much shelf space they took up vs the profit margins they earned on them compared to the explosion of glossy coloured magazines in the seventies. Particularly in the post implosion days.

I sure most parents had the same reaction mine did, which was only expecting to pay a bit of change for something to keep the kids occupied... Not having to dig into the paper money for something two-three times as much. I think Mad Magazine was even cheaper as well, with the added benefit that my dad would read those after we were done reading them.

My mom must have loved the dollar comics. I guess maybe she realized the value, or knew I'd love any book that had Batman, Robin AND Batgirl in solo stories. Same for World's Finest and Superman Family. I had a few Adventure Comics too, including the resolution to Batman's death. Quite a shocker for a 4 year old!!!

THIS comic is one of my happiest childhood comic related memories. I saw this cover while shopping with my mom and forced a baby sitter to trudge nearly a mile back to the store to get it.

I was a bigger fan of Robin and Batgirl than I was of the caped crusader himself.

My favourite part of this is the baby sitter's "ewwww" reaction to the cover, that kinda cemented the purchase as "epic" to six year old me.

I missed out on the original, but I got that story in a "Batman Family" digest in the 80s. Fun stuff. Some of Don Newton's first work on the Bat-characters too.

Dollar Comics...back when comic books were fun...

I really enjoyed them when they were .35 cents. I remember getting annoyed when they raised their prices to .50 cents. Now those were the good ole days.

Is that the version of The Outsider that was Alfred? I thought the recent Flashpoint mini held some potential for the character, but he hasn't shown up in the new 52 DCU yet has he? I'm hoping he's The Shade's nemesis rather than the Earth 2 big bad. Although the Shade miniseries in the new 52 DCU is rather baffling... Since none of David Knights adventures exist in the new continuity.

Yeah it's Alfred. First time he returned since his initial reveal as Alfred in the 60s.

I loved Starman, but DC has gutted so much of their past (far, FAR more than with any previous reboot, even COIE), I just can't get into this new Shade mini. Too much has been swept away for no good reason.

The storyline that always kind of fascinated me in the pages of Batman Family was the mystery on Barbara's older brother Tony Gordon, and the way politically incorrect Sino Supermen.
