The eventual Busiek/Perez version may be the last truly fun comic project published by the big two before both seemed to get mired in the super-mega-event-blood-and-gore-reboot era.

Oh yeah I think those days are gone.... JLA/Avengers was a last hurrah. Even if Marvel and DC did get together again for cross-overs, the characters are not the same anymore. The Marvel ones are basically the same, but the DC guys are not the same incarnations...

Probably not, but it only inspires me to add/broaden the horizons of my back issue collection. I'm going for runs of stuff I never would have in the past due to wanting more of the fun 70's/early 80's vibe.

That is so weird...I just picked up that Superman/Spiderman with the painted cover Friday afternoon at my local shop. They had just gotten it in.

This is the best Marvel/DC cross over I ever read. JLA 103 (1972). Just because it wasn't advertised as such and well, can you imagine the excitement of a then young reader to see Marvel heroes in a DC comic book.

I love the old Marvel DC crossovers. I've collected the classic ones in every format they were published in... treasury edition, paperback, etc.

It is a great shame that the original JLA/Avengers crossover never happened. That would have been so cool.

There were also plans for a second X-Men/Teen Titans book, but plans for that were scrapped, too.

One of my favourite newer crossovers is the Superman/Fantastic Four book. It was originally published in treasury edition sized format, like the classic ones.

The Batman/Captain America crossover by John Byrne is also a great book.


Most of the Marvel/DC crossovers are available in the various "Crossover Classics" collections, voulmes I to IV. They've been out for a few years now.
However, they don't contain all the crossovers.

Byrne's Darkseid/Galactus crossover was a good one, too.

While there has been no official cosmic reset of the MU, after Civil War, House of M, JMS' Spider-Man stuff, etc, I can't really think of them as the same characters either.

Yup, and that one was to be handled by Wolfman and Perez, with the villains being Brother Blood and the Hellfire Club. According to Marv, it never got beyond the planning stages, thanks to Shooter putting an end to the crossovers.

Marvel was so dominating the landscape at that time that Shooter didn't want Marvel promoting DC's characters and creators. It would have been like putting a Whopper in a Happy Meal.

It sucks, but it was probably smart business.
