I know I was sort of hard on Garfield in the beginning for his BIG head, lol.

But not only does he resemble Parker more than Maguire...but I believe he's a more sincere type of an actor.

Did you see him in The Social Network?

    The dude was amazing.

Maguire on the other hand always has this perpetual smirk on his face...even when he's acting all serious or even crying...it's really annoying, lol.

Plus Garfield is much skinnier...that's how Spidey supposed to look...skinny...not buff like Maguire achieved in the previous Spidey movies.

Some folks prefer Ditko, others Romita.

Stan lee always said he preferred Ditko's more homely Peter, despite the fact that the character's popularity really took off when Romita drew him as being much less so.

I prefer the Ditko version ( sorry JR) if for no other reason than its the original and seems more "in character" for how he was being written. Ironically Eric Larson is probably the closest ive seen any get to the original Ditko version out of anyone.

X-MFC is more of an exception that survived & shined in spite of these types of challenges, not so much as a direct benefit from them. Seems to me that its appeal is rooted in the script and the dynamics of the cast.

I don't see Garfield, Stone & Ifans carrying this movie to the degree that Fassbender & McAvoy carried FC. I hope I'm wrong and that it proves to be amazing after all. Unfortunately history points in the other direction, as do my instincts.

For folks in any creative field, sometimes you do your best work under pressure and adversity. Maybe it would have been an even better film if it had been smooth sailing, or maybe not. We can only speculate if it's one or the other, but that's the example as requested, even if it's the exception that proves the rule.

Terry Gilliam seems to be someone driven by this kind of stress and antagonism to create some pretty genius work in the face of overwhelming odds (even if the box office does not necessarily agree at the time, history seems to have given him the upper hand). He spoke about this at great length on a recent CBC podcast... fascinating stuff.

Who knows how Marc Webb and co are really handling it, particularly without much of a track record. For what it's worth, IMHO, 500 Days of Summer does seem to be a nice place to start when it comes to bringing in some romance and charm to the franchise. I actually think Stone is a step up from Dunst, although a step down from Howard (not that she was given very much to do in her Spiderman 3 role). I would have preferred Garfield's Social Network cast mate, Jesse Eisenberg as Peter Parker... but again, Ditko or Romita?

                  Whether that's enough? <shrug>

I really liked Raimi's take on Spidey so I've read very little about the reboot. Like others I would have preferred they just jump into the story rather than retell the origin, but who knows they might do something really interesting with it.

Garfield's a good actor. Seems a little tall for Spidey, but Hugh Jackman's nearly a foot taller than what Wolverine is supposed to be in the comics. I like Stone, but she does seem to be much more of a Mary Jane type to me than Gwen, whereas Dunst would have been a better Gwen, to me, and it's not just the hair color.

But, I'm just going to go to the movie and try to enjoy it for whatever it is. Superman Returns and Green Lantern have taught me not to anticipate or expect too much when Hollywood deals with my favorite characters.

Yeah, Webb is among my greatest concerns, along with the casting. Track record, I think, is key. Is he confident enough in himself to stand up for what he believes in and is he willing to battle it out with the suits. Or, does he simply play it safe in the role of a yes man to ensure future projects?

Emma Stone is abrasive, and would be an OK Ultimate Gwen Stacy, but IMO is a poor choice to portray classic Amazing Gwen Stacy. Seems this movie is more in tune with Ultimate than Amazing, so maybe she's a better fit than it appears on the surface, although in the trailers it doesn't seem as though she's supposed to be as "street" as she is portrayed in the Ultiverse.

I thought Bryce did a great job as Gwen, however I've never been a big fan of Kirsten's casting in the role of MJ either. Even though I do like her in many of her other roles, she just wasn't a great fit for MJ (which is why I think the idea is absurd that just because Garfield played his most notable role well, he's a natural for this one).

Here is a reported description of the excerpt Sony is showing of the Amazing Spider-man. This lends some insight into why no one has seen the Lizard yet.

                        Description of SDCC footage:

They begin with Peter Parker walking the halls of his high school when the bell rings and a ball hits him in the head. He’s then late for class, which his teacher calls him out for, making for a pretty terrible day. We then see Peter eying Gwen Stacy from across the room, clearly fond of her.
To make the bad stuff a little worse, he’s also being beaten up at school, to which we later see him responding with a beating of his own. He’s the one that gets in trouble, though, forcing the school to call his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) to come in. They tell him Peter attacked another student, and Ben asks him later if it was true. Peter tells him yes, but that he was just sticking up for himself.
Uncle Ben makes Peter feel bad by telling he had to switch shifts with someone at work in order to come to the school, so Peter is going to have to pick up his Aunt May (Sally Field). This could possibly be setting up what happens to Ben, and how Peter feels about it.
After Uncle Ben leaves, Gwen comes over to Peter and there’s a little awkward flirting before Peter gets up the courage to ask her out, to which she accepts as though she’s been waiting for him to ask for a long time now. Peter then skips away happily.
Back at home, Peter finds an old briefcase belonging to his father. He goes through it, finding some glasses that he puts on, an old Oscorp badge, and some various files. Aunt May comes in and says to him “Your father was a very secretive man.”
We then cut to Peter waking up, and now he’s very strong. He accidentally smashes his alarm clock, he squeezes way too much toothpaste out, then tries out his new–found strength by going on the subway, acting weak, and then hitting a thug.
Then some clips of him playing around with his abilities: testing out his web–slingers, beating people up, him trying out one of his costumes, and a funny altercation with a car thief. Some more about his father and how he believed it was your responsibility to help people if you were able to. There’s a shot of an accident on a bridge and then Spidey swinging in; we see a spider symbol. Then to the Stacy house where Gwen’s father, George (Denis Leary), saying he’s going to catch the spider guy.
Next up is a quick glimpse of the wrestling scene and then Aunt May asking where he’s getting all the bruises from. We see an arrest warrant being issued for the “vigilante known as Spider–Man,” and then Aunt May again, saying “Peter, secrets have a cost” to end this bit of footage.
The next footage focuses on something completely different: Dr. Curt Connors, or as you might better know him, The Lizard. Peter is on a field trip to Oscorp, where Connors works. The actor playing Connors, Rhys Ifans, is wearing a green arm sleeve which will later be removed as Connors is missing an arm.
Peter responds to something Connors says before Connors leaves in a hurry and goes to a lab. When there he takes some sort of strange serum, puts it in a machine, takes it out, and then injects himself with it before starting to writhe in pain and change.
We then see a couple of girls in a public bathroom complaining about boys, about to burn a picture. But when they flick the lighter on, a burst of air blows it out and the toilet begins to rattle and shake, then caves in through the floor. Then, bursting through the floor where the toilet was, appears The Lizard. The girls try and run, but Lizard corners them getting very close a la Alien, and then sticking out his tongue and grunting as the girls scream.
As for how the giant reptilian man looks, it seems to depend: some hate it, some think it’s all right, and some love it. Only you can judge! The one noticeable catch is that his long face/snout from the comics is not used, and that his face is more flat/man–like. Our crew in attendance at the panel felt that the CGI work, which is most likely still being worked on, is not up to par at this time and The Lizard is coming off so far looking like The Hulk.
No matter what you think of this movie or how it looks, you can’t deny how awesome Garfield’s appreciation for being able to play the character is. His surprise appearance and speech is one of the highlights of this year’s Comic–Con.

I would also like to add there was reported footage of Peter testing his web-shooters for the first time and they have a digital read on them. A blue laser if you will so he can accurately hit his target.

The latest trailer for the movie looks pretty cool.
As a die-hard Spidey fan, I'm looking forward to this. Sure, from what I've seen so far, there are already things I think they should have handled differenty, but I'll give the picture the benefit of the doubt for the moment. Once I've seen the movie I'll make up my mind about what I do and don't like about it, from a proud Spidey fanboy perspective.

Oh WOW...this new full trailer kicked major arse!!!

Andrew Garfield makes a great Parker/Spidey...he has the face, the acting chops, the voice...and most of all...he's better built for Spidey than the shorter and slightly stockier Tobey Maguire...wow...I LOVE the look of this movie...and Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy is gonna make everyone forget about Kristen Dunst's Mary Jane...

...I might be in the minority here...but this trailer gave me more goosebumps than even The Avengers...believe it or not...

I watched the new trailer and found it better than expected. What is STILL bothering me though is the rubbery look of the suit. I thought they would clean that up in post production. It has too much shine to it, like it's suppose to be made of rubber in the movie. Not quite getting the thinking there. Spidey's personality closely mimics Raimi's version though. So there are common denominators here. The Lizard is till being kept under wraps. I'm guessing they still have lots of CGI work to do.
