Yeah, Ellison himself tells the story of how he was just *****ing about it to no avail, up until Cameron opened his trap, much to Orion's dismay. He even used the term smoking gun IIRC.

And the only reason we even know about this given the non disclosure settlement is that there was one version that snuck out on TV or home video without his inserted credit. Which gave him license apparently to go out and bang the drum.
