The original Defenders team really worked for me, Subby, Surfer and the Hulk were all shunned and feared by society, no team like the Avengers would have accepted them at the time. Granted Hulk will always be a founding member of the Avengers, but they never accepted or trusted him in the team. Dr Strange was a kind of wise wizard figure that embraced and held them together.

    >having them serve on multiple X-Men and Avengers teams is stretching it a bit

The hardest working superhero in New York! I don't think I mind having characters jump teams.... but having them on a couple of teams at once is awkward.... especially if they're still appearing in their own solo book. (That sort of thing used to drive me nuts as a kid. When do these guys sleep?)

    >plus look whose heads were still on the masthead...The REAL Defenders

I dunno.... they're missing Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Hellcat....

I didn't care so much for the New Defenders either. I always preferred the wacky "Elf with a gun" era team and stories.

Storm has actually been an Avenger for years now in the all ages titles.

    I will give you that.

That was back when the X-Men were all students in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters....Beast was the 1st of the original team to graduate, got a job at Brand Industries and turned into everybody's loveable blue-furred hero.

Nowadays though the X-Men are no longer students but grown adults who have functioned as an actual super-hero team(s) for years....So having them serve on multiple X-Men and Avengers teams is stretching it a bit....

Angel and Iceman were also Champions.

Plus Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch... Brotherhood of evil mutants.

Those wanting a more traditional Avengers team should be happy with the movie Line up of Avengers launching in Avengers Assemble #1 next year... Bendis and Bagley on creative.

Ultimates also has a fairly traditional roster as well.

As a marketing move, you do have to hand it to Marvel... They have a title that would have traditionally been callled defenders/heroes for hire title in the top ten by simply naming it New Avwngers, not to mention successful runs of what might be called Thunderbolts or New Warriors by branding them Dark Avengers and Young Avengers. Don't forget a team that might as well be called the Champions as the Secret Avengers.

Plus launching a title that should be called Power Pack or X-terminators as a continuation of FF/Future Foundation when Fantastic Four resumes.

If the sales didn't reflect it, Spiderman and Wolverine wouldn't be on a hundred teams. It's funny for me that I these days I'm enjoying Spiderman the most in every other title like FF and New Avengers much more than his solo title. His sense of humor does end up stealing every scene he's in, not to mention how underused his scientific expertise has always been in his own title. I'm really enjoying seeing him as a scientist alongside Reed Richards and Iron Man. It's obvious how much fun he is to write in these group books.. Even retaining the ol' Parker luck.

You all need to settle down. The lineup for the Avengers has always been very fluid. Thanks God the internet wasn't around when Stan dumped the original team and the Avengers lineup became 3 third sting villains and a golden age hold over that Marvel didn't quite know what to do with.

Another Kree guy. It's Grant Morrison's Marvel Boy. I think the character's name is Noh-Varr

Do they need 2 Spider-people on the same team?

And I see they're changing Hawkeye's costume to bring him more in line with the movie version.....Ugh!
Drop Spider-Man and Wolverine out of that and its a pretty good line up. Maybe add Hulk or Skaar for unpredictable muscle.
